Job Description:

USM serves about 1,400 students at its main campus in Leavenworth, including its satellite locations in Overland Park and Lansing Correctional Facility, as well as online.POSITION SUMMARY: This is a 10-month faculty position within the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, instructing human anatomy and physiology courses, as well as fulfilling duties as a laboratory assistant in the Human Anatomy Laboratory. The Human Anatomy Laboratory serves multiple stakeholders within the University of Saint Mary, as well as external partners. A background in teaching, working with human cadavers, and experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and abilities is highly desired. The faculty member is responsible for teaching, advising, service, and scholarship in compliance with the Faculty Handbook. USM and the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics have a close, collegial faculty dedicated to the teaching-learning relationship. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Plan, create, and deliver educational content for each course assigned for lecture and laboratory components. Courses may include, but are not limited to, Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II and other human biology-related coursework within the biology program
  • Evaluate and revise curricula, course content, course materials, and teaching methods, as required in the maintenance of high-quality and relevant programs of study in biology and health sciences
  • Assist in the preparation of semester schedules, selection of textbooks/digital media, and program planning
  • Provide attendance, grade, and assessment data in a timely fashion to students and to the University
  • Maintain records as required for student attendance, advising, and grading
  • Be available to students through regularly scheduled office hours, participate in Wednesday activities and career readiness events, attend undergraduate research forums and other events as needed
  • Provide comprehensive advising to students, including assisting with course selection, crafting degree plans to meet major requirements, and helping students navigate career choices.Attend scheduled Division meetings, Faculty Senate meetings, committee meetings, and University Assembly meetings, as well as attendance at mandatory university ceremonies and events
  • Advise and/or work with student organizations, clubs, or related activities as needed
  • Participate in student recruitment, registration, campus visits, and placement activities as appropriate
  • Assist the Human Anatomy Lab Coordinator with procurement and preparation/dissection of donors in alignment with curricular needs within the Human Anatomy Lab for undergraduate and graduate coursework
  • Collaborate with the Human Anatomy Lab Coordinator on the development of programming within the Human Anatomy Laboratory, including participation in recruitment and community outreach events utilizing the Human Anatomy Lab as necessary
  • Preparing a self-performance evaluation with regard to teaching, advising, service and scholarship on an annual basis
  • Perform additional job-related duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS:
  • A Master of Science degree in biology or a closely related discipline is required. Ph.D. or all but dissertation is preferred.
  • Ability to teach and work in person at the main campus of the University of Saint Mary
  • Prior college-level teaching preferred
  • Prior experience working with anatomical donors is preferred but not required
  • Ability to maintain a stationary position for extended periods of time during dissections
  • Ability to regularly lift a minimum of 25 pounds and occasionally lift a minimum of 50 pounds
  • Competency in using Microsoft Office products
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to be a mission-focused team player, interact, and effectively work and teach in a diverse environment.
  • Must successfully clear the required background screen as appropriate
