Basic Commerce and Industries, Inc. (BCI) expects an opening for a human factors engineering (HFE) position in summer/fall 2024. Anticipated areas of work include surface ship steering and propulsion systems and bridge systems. Job Location: Dahlgren, VA Job Start Date: Summer/ Fall 2024 Shift: Days~ 0800- 1600 Experience Required: A master's degree in human factors engineering or a related field (e.g., industrial engineering or experimental psychology) or a relevant Bachelor's degree with additional professional experience is required. Practical experience in user interface requirements development, iterative design, or test and evaluation is required. Candidates should have strong communication skills, be capable of taking the initiative in identifying and solving problems, and be able to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams. Experience in at least one of the following specific areas is preferred: evaluation and selection of hardware and design of displays for use in ship bridges or similar environments; layout and arrangement evaluations of shipboard spaces; evaluation and development of surface ship steering and propulsion or hull, mechanical, and electrical systems; user-centered human-computer interface (HCI) design processes; or lighting and photometric measurements. Description of Duties: Perform lab-based and shipboard human factors assessments of developmental and fielded steering and propulsion control systems, bridge systems, and/or shipboard, ground vehicle, or portable displays intended for use in a low level lighting or dark-adapted environment. Contribute to the requirements and design of shipboard systems through development and validation of requirements, user feedback and assessments, and design iterations. Conduct analyses and reporting to support collaboration with program offices, design and integration agents, training representatives, and vendors in order to improve fielded systems. Support user interface commonality and standardization efforts across Navy platforms and systems. Travel Requirements (if any): Periodic visits to system developer or test sites and surface navy fleet concentration areas will be required, which is expected to require a travel rate between 10% and 20%.
