The role involves fostering a safe and supportive learning environment that promotes academic growth, critical thinking, and the development of social-emotional and behavioral skills. This position requires a strong commitment to equitable education, trauma-informed practices, and restorative approaches to learning.Key Responsibilities:Instructional Planning and Delivery:
- Develop and implement creative lesson plans aligned with Connecticut state standards and the facility's goals.
- Teach core Humanities subjects, integrating ELA and social studies content with a focus on cultural relevance, historical literacy, and student engagement.
- Adapt lessons to accommodate diverse learning needs, including IEP goals, 504 plans, and behavioral interventions.
- Incorporate project-based learning and cross-curricular activities to enhance real-world application and skill-building.
Classroom and Behavioral Management:
- Establish a positive and structured classroom environment using trauma-informed practices and restorative approaches.
- Collaborate with clinical and behavioral staff to implement individualized behavioral interventions and ensure consistency in student expectations.
- Use proactive strategies to promote self-regulation, resilience, and emotional growth among students.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with interdisciplinary teams, including social workers, therapists, case managers, and support staff, to align educational plans with overall treatment goals.
- Engage in regular team meetings to review student progress, share observations, and adjust instructional approaches as needed.
- Maintain open communication with families, guardians, and external stakeholders to support each student's educational journey.
Assessment and Data Management:
- Administer formative and summative assessments to monitor academic progress and inform instruction.
- Utilize student performance data to differentiate instruction and provide targeted interventions.
- Prepare progress reports, document lesson plans, and maintain accurate attendance and grade records.
Professional Development:
- Participate in ongoing professional learning opportunities related to trauma-informed care, restorative practices, and strategies for teaching at-risk youth.
- Stay updated on educational research and best practices in teaching humanities in alternative education settings.
Qualifications:Education and Certification:
- Connecticut teacher certification in Secondary English, Social Studies, or a relevant area (or eligibility to obtain certification).
Experience:
- Prior experience teaching middle or high school students, especially in alternative education, residential, or juvenile justice settings.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed and restorative justice practices is highly desirable.
