Position Summary

As an Industrial Electrician at RTF, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient execution of electrical tasks in various industrial settings. Depending on your experience level, your responsibilities will range from assisting in material handling and basic installations (Apprentice/Helper) to performing complex electrical work (Journeyman) and leading electrical teams while managing projects (Master Electrician). This position offers an excellent opportunity for growth and advancement within our organization.

Key Responsibilities

Preparation for Installation

Apprentice/Helper:

  • Assist in unloading and organizing electrical equipment and materials.
  • Prepare tools, equipment, and components for assembly under supervision.

Journeyman:

  • Read and interpret electrical blueprints, schematics, and specifications.
  • Identify equipment and conduit installation locations and plan cable/conduit routes.

Master Electrician:

  • Review project plans, offer input on electrical designs, and coordinate with engineers/trades to resolve any discrepancies.

Installation

Installation of Supports

  • Apprentice/Helper: Assist in installing support structures for conduits, cable trays, and electrical equipment, measuring and cutting materials under supervision.
  • Journeyman: Install supports according to project specifications, ensuring proper alignment and code compliance.

Conduit and Cable Tray Installation

  • Apprentice/Helper: Help with conduit (EMT, rigid, PVC) and cable tray installation; learn conduit bending and basic routing techniques.
  • Journeyman: Independently install complex conduit and cable tray systems, performing bending, threading, and secure fastening.

Wiring and Grounding

  • Apprentice/Helper: Pull wires/cables through conduits and trays; assist in terminating wires under guidance.
  • Journeyman: Terminate and connect wiring for power, control, and signal systems; install grounding systems (ground rods, bonding conductors).
  • Master Electrician: Oversee grounding grid installations and ensure compliance with grounding standards.

Equipment Installation

  • Apprentice/Helper: Provide assistance with installing junction boxes, panels, and motor control centers (MCCs); prepare mounting surfaces.
  • Journeyman: Install MCCs, switchgear, transformers, relays, and motor control systems (up to 5kV); wire and connect substation equipment.
  • Master Electrician: Supervise installation of high-voltage equipment, ensuring compliance with technical specs and safety codes.

Inspection

Quality Assurance

  • Journeyman: Inspect electrical work for adherence to codes and specifications; verify integrity of connections and terminations.
  • Master Electrician: Conduct final inspections before testing; ensure proper labeling and documentation of circuits and equipment.

Preparation for Testing

  • All Levels: Ensure systems are correctly isolated and ready for testing; maintain a safe work environment.

Testing

Electrical Testing

  • Journeyman: Perform continuity and insulation resistance (megger) tests; test operation of control systems and protective devices.
  • Master Electrician: Oversee high-voltage testing procedures; interpret test results and recommend corrective actions.

Functional Testing

  • Journeyman: Verify correct operation of motors, drives, motor control systems, and assist with instrumentation testing.
  • Master Electrician: Coordinate with commissioning teams to ensure all electrical systems function seamlessly within the larger plant environment.

Commissioning

System Start-Up

  • All Levels: Participate in energizing systems and monitor initial operation to address any immediate issues.

Documentation and Handover

  • Journeyman: Document test results, update as-built drawings, and communicate findings.
  • Master Electrician: Compile and review commissioning documentation; conduct client handover meetings, explaining operation and maintenance requirements.

Additional Duties Related to Specific Systems

Low Voltage & Grounding

  • All Levels: Install and test communication, signal, and control systems; verify proper bonding and grounding for safety.

Relays, Switchgear, and Motor Control Systems (Up to 5kV)

  • Journeyman: Install high-voltage motor control systems; configure and test switchgear and protective relays.
  • Master Electrician: Lead high-voltage installations; ensure regulatory compliance for high-voltage systems.

General Duties Across All Levels

Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to all safety protocols and regulatory standards.
  • Use appropriate PPE and participate in safety training and emergency drills.
  • Promptly report near-misses or safety incidents.

Team Collaboration

  • Communicate effectively with co-workers and other trades.
  • Coordinate tasks to meet project deadlines and maintain workflow efficiency.

Continuous Learning

  • Stay updated on evolving electrical codes, technology, and best practices.
  • Pursue relevant certifications and attend workshops for ongoing professional development.

Role-Specific Responsibilities

Apprentice/Helper

  • Learning & Skill Development: Engage actively in on-the-job training and any required classroom instruction.
  • Support: Maintain a clean and safe work environment; assist journeymen and master electricians.

Journeyman Electrician

  • Technical Expertise: Independently complete complex electrical tasks; troubleshoot issues.
  • Supervision: Oversee apprentices/helpers; ensure work meets quality standards.

Master Electrician

  • Leadership: Manage electrical teams on large-scale industrial projects; plan work schedules and resources.
  • Coordination: Liaise with project managers, engineers, and clients; oversee all electrical aspects from start to completion.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all work complies with local/national codes; handle necessary permits and inspections.

Qualifications & Skills

Education & Certifications:

  • Apprentice/Helper: High school diploma or equivalent; enrollment in an electrical apprenticeship is a plus.
  • Journeyman: State-issued Journeyman Electrician License or equivalent.
  • Master Electrician: State-issued Master Electrician License or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Apprentice/Helper: Some construction or industrial exposure preferred but not mandatory.
  • Journeyman: Proven industrial experience with conduit bending, cable tray installation, equipment wiring, and testing.
  • Master Electrician: Extensive industrial background with project leadership and high-voltage system experience.

Technical Proficiency:

  • Ability to interpret blueprints, P&IDs, and electrical drawings.
  • Familiarity with NEC, NFPA, OSHA, and other relevant codes/regulations.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical safety procedures and best practices.
