Essential Functions:Customer Service• Conduct fire safety, home safety, fire extinguisher and pre-fire planning inspections.• Provide information to the public, install smoke detectors, conduct station tours, visit schools, and participate in public education standbys.• Work involves serving the public.• Work requires cooperative/supportive interaction with co-workers, supervisors, doctors and other healthcare workers.• Work requires interaction with representatives of other City departments, other fire departments and local, state and federal agencies.Fire Suppression• Performs fire suppression duties by responding to emergency fire alarms.• Assists in the suppression of structural, residential, commercial, industrial, chemical, petroleum, vehicle and Wildland fires; applying the appropriate extinguishing agents to the source of the fire.• Operates various pieces of fire equipment and gear for fire suppression and control; drives and operates fire apparatus; search and rescue; ventilation and salvage operations.• Provides written reports detailing specific firefighting and rescue actions taken on scene.Emergency Medical Services• Responds to emergency medical calls by evaluating situations, providing emergency and non-emergency medical procedures both on scene and in a moving vehicle, and transferring patients to medical facilities. Provide written reports detailing patient care.Communications• Portable radios are used as a means of communication.• Must conduct all radio communications in a professional, respectful manner.Engineer Maintenance• The primary duty of an Engineer is to drive the fire apparatus to alarms and operates pump at fire scenes.• Responsible for checking off, inspecting and maintaining apparatus and the equipment on the apparatus.• Verify all equipment and tools are present and accounted for and in working condition, making minor repairs if necessary.• Visually inspect fire apparatus and equipment for any damage and notify the Fire Captain if necessary.• Responsible to check fire apparatus engine compartment and ensure all gauges and lights are working properly.• Ensure the pump and pump panel and pressure relief valve are in working order.• Troubleshoot and repair any minor issues that may arise with the apparatus or equipment; report any major issues with apparatus or equipment to the Fire Captain.• Perform daily maintenance of facilities by cleaning, inspecting, and any other facility maintenance deemed necessary.Training• Participate in all required training sessions, including, but not limited to; live fire drills, performance evaluation drills, ongoing skills maintenance, practice and training, annual OSHA drills, EMS major skills and any other mandatory Company training.Compliance:• Reviews paperwork for accuracy and correct process.• Must participate in scheduled and unscheduled onsite compliance audits.• Implements corrective/preventive measures as determined by the Corporate Compliance/Audit Committee.• Cooperates with Internal Audit, Compliance and HR on any recommendations and changes to compliance and legal workflow issues.• Takes swift and immediate action in accordance with Internal Audit and Corporate Compliance on any areas of concern.• Complies and enforces all policies and procedures.• Has successfully completed all required Compliance Training within the required time period.• Has had no compliance related corrective action during the current review period.Additional Duties:• Perform other duties as directed or which may be assigned that is specific to the local operation.Qualifications:• Two years of firefighter service with Rural/Metro.• State issued or International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or (ProBoard) certifications as a minimum: Firefighter I, Hazardous Materials-Operations• If assigned to an airport operation- State, (IFSAC) or (ProBoard) certification is required.• State issued or National Registered EMT-B or EMT-P certification. Current ACLS certification required if applicant is a EMT-P• Current CPR/AED certification.• Valid driver license with acceptable driving record in accordance with Rural/Metro policy. DUI within last 5 years is disqualifying.• Able to work any shift assigned, including nights, holidays and weekends.• Available to work overtime as assigned and as needed on an emergency basis.• Must meet local standards pertaining to qualifications, training and/or eligibility for hiring placement or promotion.Education Requirements:• High School diploma or GED required.• Additional college courses as required by the operational area.Physical Requirements:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. There is a need to reach and perform moderate (20-50 pounds) and heavy (50-200 pounds) lifting during the use of tools and equipment, and while assisting others while extinguishing fires or treating ill/injured persons.As required by local operations, the candidate may be required to submit to a physical exam and/or a practical physical fitness assessment.Cognitive/Psychosocial Requirements & Mental Requirements:Frequently: Problem solving, professional judgment, decision making, reasoning.Constantly: Work requires the ability to read and write reports, follow orders and instructions and read fire manuals. General math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.Stress Factors:Frequently: Repetitive tasks, high pressure.Occasionally: Fatigue, intense tasksEquipment Operated:Office: Computers, printers, standard Microsoft Windows and Office software, fire/ems incident reporting system(s), etc.Firefighting: Fire apparatus, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), personal protective equipment, ladders, portapower units, hammers, chain saws, portable light, etc.EMS: Automatic defibrillators, Sphygmomanomer, pulse oxsimetry, angiolcaheters, stethoscopes, glucometers, backboards, etc.Working Conditions:The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
