OVERVIEWThis position is in the Digital Platforms Division, Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO), under the Under Secretary for Finance and Administration at the Smithsonian Institution (SI). The Digital Platforms Division provides leadership and technical direction for museum collections, archives, libraries, websites, APIs, digital assets, data management, and digital initiatives. This senior data engineer role involves leading large scale, complex data analyses across multiple collections, libraries, archives, databases, and systems, identifying data relationships and trends, and integrating the data to improve and enhance the discoverability of the vast collections of diverse content.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESDesign and DevelopCreates linked data methods, models, and systems to enhance content discoverability. Serves as an expert advisor, analyzing data structures, relationships, and semantics for developing, testing, implementing, and maintaining data-driven initiatives and systems.Data Analysis and Engineering SupportDevelops data models and ontologies for various domains (e.g., people, places, history, art, science). Collaborates with experts to refine models and vocabularies. Extracts data from diverse sources. Uses AI for predictive analytics and clustering. Ensures data interoperability and quality. Develops APIs and SPARQL endpoints. Documents system life cycles and data requirements. Evaluates linked data technologies.Enterprise Data LeadershipProvides technical direction and leadership in developing and implementing linked data methods and models. Researches new platforms for data discovery, conducts technical evaluations, develops system requirements, creates data models and workflows, collaborates with various units, promotes data sharing through structured data and URIs, leads data cleanup and standardization efforts, resolves metadata issues, and represents the organization in professional forums.Communication and Project ManagementDefines project scope, requirements, deliverables, risks, and constraints using project management (PM) principles. Prepares acquisition-related documents, uses PM tools to achieve project goals, coordinates multiple parties, conserves resources, presents to the technology review board, and provides direction on emerging technologies as an IT project manager.QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTSTo qualify for this position, applicants must possess a bachelor's degree (B.A.) from an accredited four-year college or university and/or 3-5 years of related experience (described below); or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • This position requires expert knowledge of IT, data models, relational and linked data structures, file formats, data workflows, data extraction, software development, and system development life cycle (LCM) policies. This expertise is crucial for guiding the Smithsonian Institution in designing, developing, and implementing data mining, warehousing, and linking methods, and resolving complex data management issues.
  • Knowledge of collections, libraries, and archive management systems, including metadata management and concepts, CIDOC CRM, Linked Art, linked data modeling, triplestores, and semantic web technologies. Proficiency in data visualization tools like Tableau or matplotlib, ontology design, Python, Java, JSON-LD, SQL, No-SQL, SPARQL, and GRAPHQL.
  • Ability to understand key data relationships, requirements, and technical policy issues. Directs analyses of data standards, designs automated data flows, and coordinates with multiple units. Must be a technical expert, self-motivated, work independently, and keep management informed. The role's complexity is heightened by SI's mission to provide access to content using new technologies.
  • Ability to develop/maintain project plans and schedules using PM support tools such as AirTable, Microsoft 365 Planner or Jira.
