Performs technical duties related to drug distribution and dispensing as a member of the pharmaceutical team to improve the outcome and quality of patient care, under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.Education
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Some college preferred
Experience
- 3-4 years pharmacy technician experience with 2-4 years of hospital pharmacy experience (with IV admixture) preferred
Licenses and Certifications
- LPT - Licensed Pharmacy Tech Registry with the D.C. Board of Pharmacy required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must have good written and verbal communication skills.
- Must have the ability to utilize computer equipment, prepackaging machines, needles/syringes, and medication carts.
- Needs basic mathematical skills and a working knowledge of the metric system.
Prepares all medications, including narcotics, for dispensing, which includes drug selection, labeling, and packaging.Enters medication orders in the computer system, evaluating/editing patient data, checking for drug allergies and duplications, calculating dosage conversions, and determining the number of doses/dosage forms needed.Picks up medication orders from the patient care area at scheduled times.Delivers filled orders to assigned nursing units and departments as scheduled.Assists in checking or investigating missing dose requests.Prepares parenteral admixture solutions.Interprets medication orders for appropriate strength, route, frequency, and duration.Monitors stock inventory levels, and expiration dates, and replenishes supplies of all stock drugs, communicating status/availability of drugs ie. out of stock drugs.Processes drug charges/credits.Performs quality improvement activities such as code carts, Pyxis, and checking outdated medications.Responds to phone calls regarding medication orders.Exemplifies Guest and Staff Relations standards in all activities.Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
