Vacancies are in the Building and Trades Division of the Development Services Department. Postingwill remain open until sufficient applications are received.Under general supervision, supervises and performs building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical inspections and evaluations of new and existing construction for compliance with approved plans, all codes and local ordinances, and other related requirements. Examines plans and specification for permits to ensure conformity to all codes and local ordinances. Requires corrections to be made when deficiencies are discovered and assists builders and owners in determining how such corrections may be made to achieve code conformance. Interprets State and local codes, laws and ordinances as well as regulations governing contractors, tradespeople, property owners and the general public. Provides information on codes, ordinances and other building regulatory requirements. Issues notices of violation where unsafe or illegal conditions exist and conducts follow-up inspections to ensure that corrections are made. Investigates alleged violations of codes and related ordinances. Performs related work as required.This is a HMEA union position. The hours of this position are 40 per week and the above salary includes 5% in lieu of overtime.Newly hired full-time Inspector IIs who possess Connecticut certification as an Assistant Building Official or Building Official will be eligible for a $5,000 signing bonus, payable within the first 30 days of employment. An additional $5,000 retention bonus every six (6) months from date of appointment until 07/31/2026.Newly hired full-time Inspector IIs hired who do NOT possess Connecticut certification as an Assistant Building Official or Building Official will be eligible for a 50% of the above bonus until certification is obtained.Distinguishing Characteristics Incumbents have specialized knowledge in one specific trade but may perform inspections in other areas as authorized under the Assistant Building Official certification.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesThe examination will consist of rating your training and experience as contained on your application. It may also include a written test, an oral test, or a combination thereof. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. The examination will be designed to measure; Knowledge of codes and ordinances regulating the construction, alteration, installation and repair of heating, refrigeration, building, and electrical structures and systems; Knowledge of materials, methods and techniques involved in the building and trade professions; Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications; Ability to recognize faulty construction and unsafe conditions in new and existing structures; Ability to operate computers and use a variety of software; Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with owners, contractors, work associates and the general public; Ability to prepare clear and concise records and reports.QualificationsOpen to all applicants who meet the following qualifications:Graduation from an accredited vocational school, high school, or the equivalent AND a minimum of five (5) years of experience in building construction, or electrical installation, or heating and ventilation, or plumbing.Licenses;Certifications; Special Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license.Must possess and maintain Connecticut certification as an Assistant Building Official per the Office of Education and Management (OEDM). Possession of an Electrical Inspector, Plumbing Inspector, Mechanical Inspector, Residential Building Inspector, Heating and Cooling Inspector or Construction Inspector license may be substituted for the Assistant Building Offici l certification provided the incumbent obtains the Connecticut Assistant Building Official certification within twenty-four (24) months of appointment and maintains certification thereafter.PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONSWork is performed in an office environment and in various community settings with travel to inspection sites. Incumbent is typically required to negotiate rough terrain, to lift up to 25 pounds; to work outdoors in all weather conditions; and to work in and around traffic and equipment.Incumbents must be available for 24-hour emergency on-call duties on a rotational basis.
