The Inspector / Plans Examiner position provides a career path for multi-discipline inspector / plans examiner positions. Placement in pay grades will be dependent upon credentials held by the employee and/or the selected applicant in conjunction with the acquiring position being recruited. Examples of Duties
  • Conducts field inspections on new commercial and residential construction in progress at each phase of completion. The inspections will be assigned based on the certifications held by the employee.
  • Performs plan review of commercial and residential construction plans submitted for permitting.
  • Plans daily work route of inspections to effectively and efficiently perform field work.
  • Investigates complaints and reported violations related to building codes, and initiates actions which may include issuing red tags or contacting contractors.
  • Advises owners and contractors on the provisions of the codes and ordinances governing construction and on modifications necessary to meet requirements.
  • Advises owners and contractors on FEMA rules regarding construction in special flood hazard areas.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and specifications for building code compliance.
  • Maintains constant awareness of construction activity within the assigned work area. Assures the proper posting of building permits. Issues red tags for construction projects without building permits.
  • Daily attendance required. Attendance at department meetings and other meetings assigned by supervisor and other management or administrative staff required.
Emergency ResponseCounty employees are required to report for work during a state of emergency and are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations which may include duties other than those specified in this job description. Typical Qualifications EducationHigh school graduation or equivalent (GED), preferably supplemented with college or vocational training in plumbing installation.ExperienceA minimum of five (5) years' as an inspector, plans examiner, engineer, architect, superintendent, foreman, or competent mechanic in charge. Must have hands-on experience in the specific trades and/or disciplines required for the positionMust have Standard Certification as Inspector and/or Plans Examiner from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, Board of Building Code Administrators and Inspectors, or the ability to obtain a Provisional Certification within (60) days of employment and Standard Certification within one (1) year of issuance of Provisional Certification in accordance with Florida Statutes Chapter 468, Part XII. This position requires Standard Certification in the applicable trade(s) designated by the Building Division upon recruitment for the acquiring position.
