Job Summary: Provide instructional support to any and all students, and/or a specific student or group of students as assigned. . Instructional Assistants may be used in any classroom situation under the immediate and direct supervision of a certified professional to perform those tasks specified in the duties and responsibilities of this job description. The design, direction and evaluation of the teaching/learning process must be done by a professional employee. The Instructional Assistant is under the supervision of the certified professional in charge of the assignment and to the Building Principal. The Instructional Assistant may monitor student behavior through report, but cannot be directly involved in disciplinary procedures. The Instructional Assistant will be evaluated by the certified professional in charge of the specific assignment and the Building Principal.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Please note: Duties and responsibilities for this position will vary depending on the building and grade to which the position is assigned, and if the position supports an entire classroom, a small group of students, or provides one-on-one assistance to a student.
- Serve as a personal assistant to special needs student, providing him/her with assistance in learning activities, with special projects, personal care activities, logging daily activities, follow-up with instructional support team and parents. Duties will vary depending on the individual's needs.
- Provide and facilitate learning support activities for all or an assigned subject area.
- Provide in-class assistance to students with Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs). Assist student(s) with staying focused and on-task, monitor and report behavior problems; take notes on material being instructed, re-teach/teach material; assist students with completion of homework, classroom projects, and use of technology/computer.
- Prepare IEP students for quizzes and tests (i.e. study sessions, review games). Create and adapt quiz and test preparation materials.
- Administer quizzes/tests as per IEP under guidance of classroom teacher and learning support teacher.
- Attend/participate in IEP and team meetings, when required. Become familiar with IEPs of students serviced.
- Provide support to assigned department (English, Math, Science, ESL, etc.). Assist with preparation and set-up of learning activities, monitor students' activities; provide one-on-one assistance with learning activities and test taking in class and through tutoring, grade assignments and tests.
- Teach learning strategies to individuals and small groups in one or multiple subject areas. Develop and implement learning activities (i.e. flashcards, worksheets, etc.).
- Record assessment data and perform testing for special needs students.
- Read IEPs and provide information to teachers and others assisting that student.
- Assist with student supervision in hallways, at breakfast, during assemblies, and at beginning and end of school day.
- Perform other duties as assigned (office support, cafeteria duty, recess duty, etc.).
Qualifications: - Two years of post-secondary education required or Highly Qualified Special Education Certificate through PDE or satisfactorily passed the CAPE Test
- Experience with children with Autism preferred; advanced training/degree a plus.
- Must demonstrate the ability to be highly structured and organized and
- have good communication skills.
- Must have obtained (or will obtain) valid PA Criminal, PA Child Abuse and FBI Criminal History Background Checks within the last twelve (12) months.
