Position DetailsPosition Information Position Type Professional Staff Faculty TrackPosition Title Instructional Designer I Employment Status Full Time Months 12 Campus Portland, ME Description The Instructional Designer I (ID1) works with subject matter experts, faculty, instructional design team members, and college staff to maintain and revise online learning experiences for a variety of degree and non-degree programs. The ID1 ensures technical functionality of all course elements, before and during course run as well as engages in post-run review and analysis of learning and teaching experiences.The ID1 prepares courses within the Learning Management System each term, including performing quality assurance reviews, updating syllabi, course schedules, and learning modules, as well as setting up multimedia resources, third-party integrations, and gradebooks. Typical course design and production activities will include, and are not limited to:Content Creation, Course Management and Course Maintenance
- Collaborate with course stakeholders to create and manage instructional activities, materials, and media using instructional design theories and best practices.
- Propose course improvements based on analysis of existing courses, consulting with stakeholders on design, learning objectives, activities, and evaluation methods.
- Prepare courses within the Learning Management System each term, including:
- Updating syllabi (policies, descriptions, grading policies).
- Creating course schedules and support information.
- Developing and building learning modules (overviews, objectives, materials, assessments).
- Setting up multimedia resources and gradebooks.
- Conduct quality assurance reviews, functionality testing, and facilitate course approval per College's quality guidelines.
- Maintain live courses throughout the semester, responding quickly to faculty or student concerns.
- Conduct functionality testing, including that of integrated and non-integrated third-party platforms.
Project and Time Management and Collaboration
- Develop project timelines for course revisions under guidance from Director of Learning Experience
- Ensure that projects are delivered on time and meet high-quality standards.
- Attend and lead regularly scheduled meetings with course stakeholders to discuss instructional design, update timelines, construct or revise learning activities, and review materials in progress.
Faculty and Student Support
- Maintain active courses throughout the semester, responding promptly to faculty or student concerns.
- Support faculty in using course management tools, such as monitoring student engagement, managing discussion forums, maintaining the gradebook, and providing feedback.
Compliance and Additional Responsibilities
- Ensure adherence to the University's intellectual property guidelines.
- Ensure ADA compliance in online and distance learning environments.
- Recommend potential instructional tools, media, and approaches to enhance teaching and learning.
- Perform other duties as assigned to contribute to a collaborative and innovative learning environment.
Qualifications A Bachelor's degree, Master's preferred, including substantial coursework and research in the fields of instructional design, curriculum development, pedagogy, or a related field, plus 2-5 years experience, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical and creative thinking skills.
- Experience with backward design for structuring learning.
- Strong technical skills and technology troubleshooting experience, including interactions with technology support providers.
- Experience creating tutorials and guides for technology users.
- The ability to persuade, motivate, instruct, and act as part of a team, and to prioritize projects and activities as required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of instructional design principles, best practices for online learning, course materials, assessment techniques, and adult learning.
- Familiarity with online teaching and learning programs in higher education or corporate settings, and familiarity with common Learning Management Systems.
- Ability to analyze procedures and make suggestions for improvement.
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, creative team environment under tight deadlines.
- Flexibility and adaptability in a work environment where needs change quickly.
- Enthusiasm for researching and experimenting with emerging online learning and web technologies.
