Salary: $54,453.00 - $57,610.00 AnnuallyLocation : Dallas, NCJob Type: Full-Time Temporary FacultyJob Number: 2022-00595Division: Arts & SciencesDepartment: ScienceOpening Date: 08/28/2024SUMMARYOpen until filled-The Temporary Full-Time Instructor-Chemistry/Biology will be responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in chemistry and/or biology courses for 2/3 of their load (12 contact hours per week) and serving as the Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) for 1/3 of their load (6 contact hours per week). The CHO duties include ensuring the safe use, handling, and disposal of chemicals in the laboratory setting, in addition to maintaining compliance with safety regulations and standards. The position of full-time faculty member is a demanding one that involves delivery of instruction, preparation and evaluation of such instruction, accessibility to students, committee assignments, and service to College and community. Faculty members teach day and evening classes at multiple instruction sites as required. This position is designed to blend teaching responsibilities with essential safety and compliance oversight. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESTeaching Responsibilities (2/3 Load, 12 Contact Hours):
  • Conduct assigned classes of instruction in the best manner to achieve student learning; present information, ideas, and skills in ways that are appropriate to a variety of learning styles and that show sensitivity to a diverse student population.
  • Provide students with the approved course syllabus and relate instruction and evaluation to that syllabus.
  • Treat students with tact and respect, maintain collegial relationships, and work productively as a member of a team.
  • Evaluate achievement with timely interim and final performance evaluations and assign grades that reflect College policy and the achievement of course objectives as stated in the syllabus.
  • Provide academic advising, maintain regular office hours, and maintain overall accessibility to students, which necessitates flexibility in arranging out-of-class consultations to accommodate student needs.
  • Maintain instructional quality and effectiveness through constant and timely revisions of programs and course syllabi within assigned content area(s).
  • Maintain class records and submit required reports in a timely manner.
  • Develop new courses and select and recommend appropriate instructional materials and textbooks.
  • Serve on College committees.
  • Attend and otherwise participate in scheduled Department, Division, and College meetings and participate in graduation.
  • Maintain currency in content areas through appropriate professional development.
  • Participate in activities that enhance the College's service to students and to the community.
  • Chemical Hygiene Officer Responsibilities (1/3 Load, 6 Contact Hours):
  • Develop the Laboratory-Specific Chemical Hygiene Plan for the lab, and ensure implementation.
  • Oversee the safe use, storage, and disposal of chemicals in laboratory settings; ensure compliance with institutional, state, and federal safety regulations.
  • Set up and maintain inventory of all departmental equipment at the Dallas, Lincoln, and Kimbrell Campuses.
  • Provide training and guidance to faculty, staff, work-study participants, and students on proper chemical handling practices and emergency procedures.
  • Serve as immediate supervisor for all work-study students in the Science Department.
  • Conduct regular inspections of laboratories to ensure safety protocols are followed; assist in audits and address any identified safety issues.
  • Maintain accurate records of chemical inventories, safety data sheets, and compliance documentation.
  • Investigate and report chemical safety incidents, and implement corrective actions as necessary.
  • Maintain departmental equipment, including calibration of equipment in biotech and chemistry labs; work with vendors to repair equipment or arrange for vendor repair.
  • Assists in the preparation of stock solutions over 1 liter for general lab use or other laboratory preparations, as needed.
  • Arrange for proper collection and disposal of all chemical and biohazard waste materials.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
  • MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS
    • Master's degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution in chemistry, biology, or a closely related field (with at least 18 graduate hours in biology or chemistry) is required.
    • Broad training in all areas of biology and/or chemistry is preferred.
    • Must meet minimum SACSCOC criteria and the minimum criteria of other pertinent accrediting, licensing, and credentialing agencies in the area of teaching assignment.
    MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
    • Prior college teaching experience is preferred.
    • Community college teaching experience is preferred.
    • Experience in general biology, chemistry, or anatomy and physiology is preferred.
    • Experience with chemical safety and hygiene management is preferred.
    • Experience with online teaching platforms, such as Blackboard, is preferred.
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
    • Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 25 pounds.
    • Frequent standing, walking, stooping, and bending is required.
    • Exposure to typical elements associated with a biology and chemistry classroom and lab environment.
    • Work environment can be stressful at times in dealing with a wide variety of challenges and deadlines.
    • In addition to regular office hours, position sometimes requires overtime and/or evening hours.
