What you do here matters, and we value every contribution.William Paterson University invites applications for the position of Instructor/Director of Sound Engineering Arts (SEA) in the Music Department, College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences starting August 15, 2024. This full-time position will serve as program director for the SEA program, as well as teach as a non-tenure track faculty member. The position is renewable annually based on satisfactory job performance in the first five years, with opportunities for promotion as well as subsequent longer contracts available based on performance and department need.We seek a dynamic, collaborative individual who can demonstrate significant teaching and leadership skills in the sound engineering field.Reporting to the Music Department Chair, the position supports the Bachelor of Music program in Sound Engineering Arts (SEA). In collaboration with the department chairperson, the successful candidate will direct the SEA program, coordinate internships for SEA majors, and teach classes in the program. This position supports the recruitment and retention of a diverse student body in the program. Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Teaches courses, both in-person and online, in sound engineering, music technology, digital music creation, and other areas as needed and as appropriate to the position.
  • Oversees the SEA curriculum.
  • Supervises and hires student workers.
  • Schedules and oversees recording sessions and classes in the recording studio. Maintains audio production facilities and equipment in the studios.
  • Recruits, supports, and mentors students in the SEA program.
  • Supports student enrollment and retention within the program as well as assessment of the program.
  • Coordinates and oversees the internship program for SEA students.
  • Participates in department, college, and/or university level committees designed to enhance instructional processes and/or programs and services.
  • Serves on appropriate student committees.
  • Maintains knowledge of current and emerging trends in the field through professional development and other opportunities.
  • Perform other teaching or administrative duties as assigned, based on departmental and programmatic needs.
Required qualifications:
  • Master of Music, Master of the Arts or Master of Science in audio engineering, music technology, sound arts, sound design, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university preferred; the equivalent in extensive and successful professional experience in the field along with academic experience may be considered.
  • Professional experience related to the functions of the position and as an audio professional.
  • Teaching experience and desire to continually improve teaching skills
  • Proficiency using analog and digital audio hardware and software.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the current professional music recording industry.
  • Ability to work in an online environment or willing to learn.
Preferred qualifications:
  • Ability to create relationships among the professional audio industry in order to develop and maintain internship opportunities, attract guest speakers, and aid in career opportunities for students.
  • Administrative and curriculum development experience in higher education.
  • Professional experience as a performing musician, music producer, or songwriter.
