Posting DetailsPosition Summary Information Position Title Instructor, High School Equivalency (HSE) Prep in Correctional Institution (Continuous Posting) Employment Category Adjunct Contract Length N/A Expected Work Schedule Standard Anticipated Days Monday - Friday Anticipated Hours variable, up to 23 contact hours per week Anticipated Hours per Week up to 23 contact hours per week Job Description Summary Plan and facilitate lessons for incarcerated adults who either lack a high school credential, or otherwise qualify for WIOA Title II services, using the North Carolina Adult Education Content Standards. Focus on developing students' critical thinking and test taking skills in addition to their reading, writing, math, science, and/or social studies knowledge. Support students' ability to succeed in the workplace, postsecondary training, and community upon graduation and release. Assist with coordination and/or conduction of new student enrollment and testing. Most contracts will require adjuncts to work face-to-face in the prison or jail facilities. Background check and pre-service facility-specific safety training, are required by the correctional sites prior to entry.Duties 1. Work inside a state or local correctional or detention facility to teach students who are preparing for the HiSet exams, transitioning to postsecondary training, and/or entering the workforce. 2. Ensure new students are properly registered, reviewing enrollment forms and coordinating placement testing.3. Utilize pre-test scores to develop targeted instruction for students.4. Maintain student attendance records and monitor students' readiness for testing.5. Communicate with coordinator and facility staff regarding students' testing needs.6. In some cases, instructor may supervise inmate Teaching Assistant.7. Oversee classroom supply inventory.Minimum Requirements 1. Bachelor's degree;2. Demonstrated experience teaching math, language arts, science, social studies, or workplace readiness skills;3. Demonstrated experience with Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.Preferred Qualifications 1. Master's degree in education, or closely related field;2. Minimum of one year's teaching experience with diverse and/or at-risk populations;3. Minimum of one year's teaching experience with adults;4. Experience teaching math (from integers to algebra) to struggling students5. Experience with research-based reading instruction for struggling students;6. Experience with academic and/or career counseling/advising;7. Experience with Basic Skills / College and Career Readiness programs in the community college setting.Special Instructions to Applicants 1.
