Job Description:Position SummaryThe Intern, Community Conservation Programs will develop and deliver bird conservation, habitat restoration, and conservation science activities at Montezuma Audubon Center (MAC), and the Montezuma Wetlands Complex.The role includes engaging community groups, working with volunteers, enhancing various habitats, assisting staff with conservation science projects, and education programs. Most of the activities take place either at the MAC, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation areas, and US Fish and Wildlife Service properties, and reach a range of ages from two to adult. Strong candidates will take a thoughtful approach to bird conservation. While the focus is on the MAC's conservation projects, the Intern, Community Conservation Programs also provides help with MAC management including animal care, staffing the front desk, and greeting visitors.This is a temporary position that will not exceed 70 hours, generally Tuesdays-Saturdays, 9am-4:30pm.Compensation:$15.00 / hour
Additional Job DescriptionEssential Functions- Implement community-based conservation programs at priority sites in and near Montezuma Center that engage new and diverse audiences and improve habitat.
- Assist staff with stewardship programs, partnerships, and projects; work with Center staff and Community Partners to incorporate Audubon priority content (e.g., native plants and lights-out) into programs and develop tools and resources appropriate for the region.
- Conduct community science and conservation action projects and other monitoring of sites in the Montezuma Wetlands Complex that adds to the data and ecological knowledge of the sites.
- Assist staff with programs for families, adults, and children at the MAC to include all aspects of programming, planning, creating lesson plans, set up and clean up, evaluation, and follow up. Types of programs include, but are not limited to, Next Generation of Conservationists programs, public programs, summer and vacation camps, youth hunter education camps, school field trips, Scout programs, after-school programs, outreach programs, teacher training workshops, birding hikes, snowshoe hikes, paddles and driving tours.
- Incorporate equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging into our educational programming. Participate fully and productively in staff meetings, planning efforts, and other shared staff duties.
- Care for inanimate and live collections; acquire, create, and maintain educational artifacts, equipment, and supplies. Duties may include researching, purchasing, maintaining, and storing such equipment and supplies.
- Interact with and work with the general public: Audubon members, teachers, board members, and government officials. This includes answering phones, fielding natural history questions, and performing other administrative duties.
- Assist with the preparation and distribution of newsletters, flyers, and proposals.
- Articulate the missions of the National Audubon Society, Audubon Connecticut/New York, and Montezuma Audubon Center to the community.
- Other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience- Interest in Conservation, Ornithology, Environmental Interpretation, Education, Natural Resource Management, or related field.
- Knowledge of, and commitment to, the conservation of birds and other wildlife and their habitats, as well as basic natural history and environmental science.
- Interest in working with groups of children, adults, and families.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as strong organizational, time-management, and judgment skills. Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Proficient in basic office administration.
- Ability to traverse all the major pathways and trails of the MAC and on uneven terrain, and lift up to 50 lbs. with or without accommodation.
