Job Description:
The Finance & Risk Management Intern will work closely with the Risk Manager, Deputy Director of Finance, and Director of Financial Reporting & Operations to develop two improvement projects. These projects include the creation of an insurance database and a financial analysis variance model to be used by Fiscal Administrators across the city and the Financial Reporting Team. Experience in Microsoft Excel, database management concepts, insurance, accounting, and financial analysis are beneficial.Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with team members to gather and understand data requirements specific to insurance and financial reporting operations.
  • Create, update, and maintain Excel databases to track and analyze insurance policies, claims, and customer data.
  • Develop automated Excel spreadsheets using formulas, pivot tables, and macros to streamline data management processes.
  • Conduct data validation and ensure accuracy and integrity of information entered in databases and model outcomes.
  • Improve existing or create new financial report models for consistent variance output including conditional formatting.
  • Assist in generating reports and dashboards to present key metrics and insights to stakeholders.
  • Document database processes and workflows, ensuring ease of access for team members.
  • Write clear documentation explaining the financial model structure, assumptions, and methodologies. Include instructions for users on how to update or modify the model.
  • Participate in team meetings to discuss data findings and provide recommendations for process improvements.
  • Summarize internship project outcomes in a final PowerPoint presentation to Finance and Risk Management.
Students participating in the Internship Program will be responsible for the following:
  • Providing their own transportation to and from work,
  • Arriving at the work site at the time designated by the worksite supervisor.
  • Performing the tasks assigned by the vocational instructor/coordinator and the worksite supervisor in an efficient manner.
  • Demonstrating honesty, punctuality, courtesy, a cooperative attitude, appropriate dress, and a willingness to learn.
  • Conforming to the guidelines of the internship worksite.
Required QualificationsMust be a college student in good academic standing or a recent college graduate (i.e., within one year of graduation).
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Data Analytics, or a related field.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, with a solid understanding of formulas, functions, and data visualization tools.
  • Basic understanding of insurance and accounting concepts and terminology is preferred but not required.
  • Strong analytical skills with an attention to detail and a focus on accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with database management systems.
  • Experience with data analysis or visualization tools.
  • Financial analytical experience.
  • Knowledge of insurance software or CRM systems.
  • Exposure to report writing.
