Position Title: GFP Intern - Wildlife Habitat Management Intern (2 Positions)

* APPLICANT MUST BE A CURRENT PART-TIME OR FULL-TIME STUDENT (MINIMUM OF 6 CREDIT HOURS) IN UPCOMING SEMESTER OR IN THE IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING SEMESTER.

Position Description:

The intern's primary duty will be to assist the department's noxious weed control program, including herbicide application as well as the required herbicide application data entry. Ability to gain supervisory skills and becoming lead of the noxious weed control program.

The intern will create Habitat Management plans to plant shrubs, native grass seedings, and assist in all aspects of our food plots program.

The intern may assist Region II staff with miscellaneous projects, including but not limited to, posting of signs, mowing trails and parking areas, fencing, and miscellaneous wildlife habitat projects. Assistance with other division section (Fisheries, Wildlife, Law Enforcement, and Animal Damage Control) projects will be encouraged, as time and opportunity permit.

Qualifications:

Applicants should have general knowledge of South Dakota's noxious weed control program and ATV/UTV experience. Experience with farm machinery and heavy equipment, as well. Applicants should know how to write a land management plan and habitat management plans to implement native grass seeding and shrub plantings from start to finish.

Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.

All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
