Join Howard University and thrive with us! BASIC FUNCTION:The International Student Advisor provides support to international degree-seeking students. The position provides academic and immigration advising and support services to international students and exchange visitors (J-1). The International Student Advisor implements orientation and departure programs. The position also assists in the recruitment of new international degree-seeking students. As a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) the position prepares and tracks immigration documents. The position also provides support in all aspects of international student services and recruitment. SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:N/APRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Maintains the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and all related certification requirements. Organizes SEVIS data processing and maintains data and quality control management.
  • Establishes, updates and tracks SEVIS files. Provides immigration information to international students, monitors and tracks student immigration status, and maintains appropriate files.
  • Advises students with immigration petitions and applications to include processing for new F -1 and J-1 work permits, reinstatement, reduced course load authorizations, change of status, medical leave, and economic hardship employment authorization
  • Coordinates and plans programs that support the needs of F-1 and J-1 students including the development and implementation of retention strategies and new student orientation programs
  • Provides advising for degree-seeking, international students ensuring that students are fully enrolled and meeting class, graduation, and immigration requirements
  • Assists students with class registration procedures. Provides on-going information meetings regarding academic requirements, career advising, OPT and CPT opportunities, and cultural issues for international students
  • Ensures international student are compliant with university regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Update I-20 Forms
  • Supports international students experiencing cross-cultural, family, personal or economic crisis.
  • Helps students to access appropriate community services and resources
  • Assists with efforts to build and maintain positive relationships with staff and faculty, campus wide, to help establish 'international student friendly' policy and practice campus wide
  • Develops relationships to ensure communication regarding both the students' and the departments' academic interests and needs
  • Functions as a liaison between students and campus units and departments to expedite resolution of student problems or issues involving international students
  • Serves as a liaison between various campus units
  • Develops and maintains connections with global organizations in the Washington Metropolitan Area to assist with on-going recruitment of students.
  • Promotes University opportunities to prospective students by developing and delivering presentations to high schools, businesses, and organizations
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

  • Candidates must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Skill in operation of computers, related software applications (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access). Knowledge of standard office equipment.
  • Proficient with Excel and the use of pivot tables

  • Ability to demonstrate superlative customer service.
  • Ability to work autonomously and with minimal guidance
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:Required Education: Baccalaureate degree or Master's degree in International Relations, Cultural studies, Education, or related field.Required Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of experience in advising students in a higher education setting and experience with student information systems.Must meet regulatory eligibility to be a Designated School officer (DSO): A DSO must be either a citizen or a lawful permanent resident of the United States.Demonstrated experience with and sensitivity to working with students of diverse backgrounds for whom English is not their first language.Computer proficiency and a demonstrated ability to quickly learn new technological systems a must.Compliance Salary Range DisclosureCompensation Range $54,545 - $60,000
