Position Overview:
We are seeking a seasoned International Trust and Estate Attorney with a strong background in complex cross-border trust, estate, and wealth planning matters. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 7-10 years of experience advising high-net-worth individuals, families, and institutional trustees on international trust and estate planning issues, as well as tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Client Advisory: Provide sophisticated legal advice to ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) clients, including families, entrepreneurs, and family offices, on trust and estate planning, cross-border wealth transfer, tax planning, and asset protection.
- Cross-Border Expertise: Advise on international issues such as dual citizenship, foreign trusts, tax treaties, and U.S. estate and gift tax implications for non-residents and U.S. expatriates.
- Estate and Succession Planning: Develop and implement estate planning strategies including wills, revocable and irrevocable trusts, family limited partnerships, and charitable giving strategies.
- Tax Compliance: Navigate complex tax considerations and provide guidance on international tax compliance issues, including FBAR and FATCA requirements, as well as U.S. and foreign tax filing obligations.
- Corporate Structuring: Advise on cross-border corporate structures and entity formations to facilitate tax-efficient wealth transfer and asset protection.
- Regulatory Liaison: Interact with domestic and foreign tax authorities and financial institutions, ensuring compliance with local and international regulations.
- Litigation Support: Assist in trust and estate litigation matters, providing expertise in disputes over cross-border trust and estate issues.
- Collaboration: Work closely with other attorneys, accountants, and wealth managers to ensure holistic client service and cohesive planning.
- Mentorship: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior attorneys, sharing knowledge and supporting professional development.
Qualifications:
- Education: Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school; admission to the New York State Bar required.
- Experience: 7-10+ years of experience in an international law firm with a focus on cross-border trust and estate planning.
- Technical Expertise: Extensive knowledge of U.S. and international tax law, estate planning, and relevant tax treaties; experience with high-net-worth clients required.
- Client-Centric: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain long-term relationships with sophisticated clientele.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to manage complex projects independently with a strategic, solutions-oriented approach.
- Language Skills: Proficiency in additional languages is an asset but not required.
