INTERPRETER-DEAF/HARD OF HEARING Under general supervision acts as the interpreter between student and teacher or other staff member and provides tutoring or guidance; translates a variety of materials into sign language; supportive duties and related clerical work as required. POSITION IN THE ORGANIZATION Reports to: School Site Principal or His/Her Designee SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES •Acts as interpreter between student and teacher when necessary •Interprets for students using manual communication in integrated settings with regular students •Provides assistance to special education students in integrated classes through tutoring, guidance or arranging for other resources •Translates test responses or reports into forms the teacher or other staff member can understand •Translates a variety of materials into sign language •Translates communications between students and staff members when necessary •Performs routine clerical work which may include typing, filing and duplicating •Does other related work as required •Establishes and maintains good working relationships with others •Participates in workshops and inservices as required MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Any combination equivalent to graduation from High School and some applicable experience or training working as an interpreter for the Hearing Impaired. Ability to interpret and communicate with students through sign language. Must pass proficiency test as legislated by the State of California. Must possess a California Drivers License and must submit to a Motor Vehicle check as required. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES •Knowledge of the general understanding of needs of hearing impaired children and of basic elements of child growth and development •Knowledge of childhood exceptionalities including implication of prelingual deafness, skill in use of total communication, experience or training in assisting hearing impaired children with language development •Ability to deal effectively with children in crisis situations •Must be physically fit to lead and participate in a variety of vigorous activities. •Ability to see and hear conditions relating to the safety of self and others. •Ability to speak in an indoor and outdoor setting well enough to project voice throughout classroom, playground and multipurpose room. •Strength to lift/carry equipment/supplies/children up to 50 pounds. •Must have adequate body movement or mobility to stoop, bend, reach and climb.Requirements / QualificationsPlease submit required documents as attachments online: 1) One letter of recommendation 2) Proof of HS Diploma or GED (can be substituted for higher degree) 3) If you have at least 48 units or credit hours of college coursework, please include unofficial transcripts. 4) Copy of the Educational Sign Skills Evaluation (Elementary School Grade Level with minimum 4.0 rating) ONLY COMPLETE PACKETS WILL BE CONSIDEREDIf you do not have at least 48 units or credit hours of college coursework you will be required to pass a proficiency test as legislated by the State of California. A study guide may be picked up with the receptionist at our District Office. The district office hours are from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and closed from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm Monday - Friday. Cost for this background check is $57.00 to be paid for by the applicant.
