Position Type: Student Support Services/InterpreterDate Posted: 9/15/2023Location: Suffolk Public SchoolsClosing Date: UNTIL FILLEDInterpreter (10 Months/Full Time) Salary: $32,687 - 41,929 (CERT II) $36,037 - 46,226 ( CERT III)Performs responsible human support work assisting individual hearing impaired students by use of sign language from spoken English; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the School Principal. Primary Responsibilities:
  • Facilitating communication between deaf students and hearing faculty/staff using the process of interpretation/transliterating.
  • Interprets the spoken word by way of sign language for hearing impaired students assigned to regular classrooms;
  • Assists the regular classroom teacher and the hearing impaired teacher to achieve the instructional goals of hearing impaired students;
  • Assists the hearing impaired teacher in performing specific duties as assigned.
  • Works with individual or small groups of hearing impaired students to reinforce materials introduced by the regular and/or classroom teacher;
  • Participates in inservice training programs as assigned;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Travel Requirements
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • General knowledge of practices, methods, and techniques used in American sign language in addition to aspects of deaf culture;
  • Ability to translate/interpret through sign language from spoken English to hearing impaired students;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents, students, and the general public.
Education Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience working with hearing impaired students. Certification Possession of Level I of the Virginia Quality Assurance Screening Test of the Virginia Department of Deaf and Hard of Hearing within one year of employment. Possession of Level III of the Virginia Quality Assurance Screening of the Virginia Department for Deaf and Hard of Hearing within three years of employment. Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires reaching, standing, fingering, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, peripheral vision, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
