SUMMARYResponsible for helping Deaf individuals understand what is being said in a variety of situations. An interpreter must understand the subject matter so he or she can accurately translate what is being spoken into sign language. The main job duty of a sign language interpreter is to interpret the spoken word into sign language. Carrying out this main duty requires listening, sign language and communication skills. A good memory is also important since an interpreter will need to remember what has been said in order to sign it.

ATTRIBUTES- Knowledge of Cultural aspects of Deafness as related to medical and professional interpreting.
- Follow and maintain the RID Code of Professional Conduct.
- Excellent human relations and communication skills.
- Multitasking and prioritizing skills. Work under pressure.
- Proficiency in use of computers
- Bachelor's Degree in American Sign Language required.
- Minimum of 2 years interpreting as well as substantial experience in medical and academic interpreting preferred.
- At time of hire must meet one of the following:Hold a valid Certification of Interpretation (CI)Hold a valid Certification of Transliteration (CT)National Interpreter Certification (NIC)Completion of the written portion of the National Interpreter Certification (NIC)Completion of the CASLI Generalist Knowledge Exam: Fundamental of Interpreting
RESPONSIBILITIESINTERPRETING & COMMUNICATION: Interpret and transliterate in a broad spectrum of situations including one-on-one doctor-patient situations, one-on-one professional-professional situations, didactic sessions, and group meetings as well as informal and formal presentations. Ability to use (or willingness to learn and master) the process of Interpretation/Dictation through the use of a digital recorder and/or the use of voice recognition software. Adheres to all federal, state and local laws and regulations governing the practice of medical interpreting in healthcare.
SUPPORT & COMPLIANCE: Knowledge of Cultural aspects of Deafness as related to medical and professional interpreting. Knowledge of Registry of Interpreters for Deaf Code of Ethics as related to medical and professional interpreting. Serve as a resource for the organization on issues related to the deaf and hard of hearing, cultural competency and access. If direct interpreting function is not in use, the expectation is for an alternate service, including but not limited to scheduling supplementary interpreters, reviewing background information/reports, obtaining charts, managing reports, etc. Performs other duties as assigned.

LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS: PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:S - Sedentary Work - Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
