This position also provides assistance in interpreting the daily lives of Civil War soldiers, Clarksvillians, and other county residents during the early to mid 1800s and the effect the Civil War had upon them (economic, social, religious, cultural, etc.).***PLEASE NOTE: A GOOD WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF FORT DEFIANCE AND THE CIVIL WAR IN CLARKSVILLE IS REQUIRED. EXPERIENCE IN A HISTORICAL GALLERY, EDUCATIONAL MUSEUM, OR RELATED ENVIRONMENT IS PREFERRED. - Ability to provide an accurate account of historical events related to Fort Defiance and the civil War in Clarksville.
- Performs customer service duties such as professionally and politely greeting and assisting visitors through the center and at the site and conducting tours as needed through the center, the fort, and other nearby historical landmarks (sometimes in period clothing and dress).
- Performs clerical tasks such as tracking attendance and may use a variety of software programs including the department's recreation management software. Serves as a cashier; operates cash register and provides receipts; receives payment for products, services, or fees; and balances cash drawer.
- Responsible for custodian functions throughout the facility up to and including performing cleaning tasks such as trash removal, sweeping, dust mopping floors, cleaning windows, parking lot and outdoor litter clean up, and set-up and break down of rooms/areas for activities. May perform basic maintenance tasks.
- Responsible for the security of the facility to include following documented procedures to open and close the facility. Maintains order and discipline among patrons by enforcing the rules and policies.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Typical QualificationsTRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):Six (6) months or more experience in a historical, gallery, educational museum, or related environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.LICENSING REQUIREMENTS (positions in this class typically require):Licensing Requirements:

- General knowledge of historical sites/interpretive center practices;
- Knowledge of Tennessee and Civil War history;

- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, including speaking to groups;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships (co-workers, employees of other City departments, volunteers, and staff of other Civil War sites and centers);
- Computer skills;
- Ability to deal courteously with the public.
