Investigator (Full Time)We are seeking an Investigator to conduct ongoing investigations in pending criminal matters. The Investigator supports staff attorneys in their representation of indigent adults and juveniles charged with crimes. Who Are You?You are a highly organized individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment. You have experience related to investigative work. You work with a high level of attention to detail and act in a professional manner at all times.What Will You Be Responsible For?
  • Working confidently within the confines of a non-law enforcement investigation.
  • Locating, interviewing, and transporting as necessary witnesses, victims, clients, etc.
  • Timely delivering subpoenas to witnesses and obtaining written records.
  • Developing, leading and maintaining reliable sources of information.
  • Assessing crime scenes and identifying, documenting, collecting and preserving potential evidence.
  • Preparing written reports of investigative activities.
  • Preparing photographic evidence, charts, diagrams, and exhibits pertinent to case investigations and court presentations.
  • Accompanying attorneys during interviews of clients and witnesses in preparation for court proceedings.
  • Utilizing office case management system to track cases, submit materials and respond to requests.
  • Reviewing and analyzing discovery materials to assist attorneys in developing strategies and plans for further investigative activities.
  • Retrieving, indexing and summarizing case-related records (medical, legal, etc.).
  • Testifying in court proceedings.
  • Assisting in the mitigation investigation, particularly for death penalty clients and juvenile clients facing life without parole by coordinating with the assigned staff attorney.
  • Supporting other investigators, administrative staff and attorneys at the direction of the Chief Counsel.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned or requested.
What Background and Skills Does the Ideal Candidate Have?
  • Testifying Competently and professionally in court concerning findings of investigations.
  • Maintaining the confidentiality of case related information.
  • Adapting to unfamiliar environments outside of the office, including a variety of communities, shelters, prisons and other institutional locations.
  • Capturing photographic images and access data preserved digitally.
  • Communicating effectively both orally and in writing in fluent English.
  • Basic computer skills, along with knowledge of general office related equipment and computer systems.
  • Developing rapport with clients and working relationships with system professionals, attorneys and community members.
  • Knowledge of social service resources, mental health issues and drug/alcohol addictions.
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings, as assigned.
  • High school diploma or its equivalent AND a minimum of five (5) years' experience as an investigator in the criminal justice field -OR- an Associate's degree in Criminal Justice AND two (2) years of related experience.
  • Act 33/34 Clearances are required prior to appointment at the cost of the applicant.
  • Applicants must possess and maintain a valid PA Driver's License throughout employment.
Job LocationThis is an onsite, office position based at the Allegheny County Office of Conflict Counsel in downtown Pittsburgh, PA.Salary and BenefitsThe salary for this position is approximately $43,178 per year.If hired, candidates would be employed by GL and assigned to Allegheny County Office of Conflict Counsel.GL benefits include:
