TITLE: IPS All-City Winter Guard Instructor

SUMMARY OF OPPORTUNITY:
The Winter Guard instructor coordinates the preparations, exercises, and activities of the All-City Band's Winter Guard program. The instructor prepares and directs the unit for independent performance and competition, as well as for performances integrated within the All-City Marching Program.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
Core Duties and Responsibilities
* Design Winter Guard programs that effectively complement and enhance the visual and musical program.
* Evaluate members' abilities and design equipment work accordingly and build positive and supportive relationships with students to create a community of performers
* Work closely with the Band Director and the other staff members to develop a visual program, including flag, uniform, and prop design.
* Attend all rehearsals and performances, and instruct members in fundamental and advanced dance, flag, and weapon technique.
* Teach members program material.
* Choreograph, arrange, and implement color guard routine(s).
* Coordinate the color guard rehearsal schedule with the Band Director.
* Create rehearsal plans in cooperation with the Band Director.
* Ensure the highest possible level of performance from color guard members through proper warm-up processes, effective preparation, and attention to individual members.
* Recruit potential color guard members while retaining current members.
* Ensure that the winter guard is properly equipped for rehearsals and performances and communicate needs to Band Director as soon as possible
* Maintain a cooperative working relationship with other relevant staff such as the Athletic Director, Band Director, Percussion Director, Band Staff, Band Members, School Administration, Booster Organization, and Custodial Staff.
* Manage all equipment necessary for rehearsals and performances including maintenance, repair, and acquisition.
* Participate in spring semester program planning as needed.
* Recommend new property purchases within the budget allocations.
* Establish communication with parents of color guard students and organize their efforts in support of the unit.
* Other related duties as assigned to assist the Band Director in preparing students for competitions and public appearances.
Day In the Life Overview
On a regular day, as the Color Guard Instructor, you might:
* Instruct and choreograph a movement/warmup exercise.
* Teach and develop show choreography.
* Develop movement or body work for the visual program.
* Write drill formations for the visual program
* Inventory flags and equipment, and prepare equipment orders.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
* Previous Marching Band Color Guard/Winter Guard experience.
* Previous experience with developing and demonstrating dance and choreography.
* DCI or Independent Guard experience preferred, but not required.
* Must attend all scheduled rehearsals.
* Must pass district background check.
