This position reports to the Superintendent of the Grounds and Move unit. This position is responsible for performing all general and preventative maintenance and repair of campus irrigation systems including mainlines and quick couplers. Plan irrigation system modifications and assist supervisor and others in installing new irrigation systems and components. Care of trees, shrubs, and vines for clearance, health, beauty, and structure Incumbent is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of lawns, outdoor space including landscape, roadways, walkways, and signage through the campus which directly impacts patients, visitors, students and staff experience while on the UCDH Sacramento Campus. This position provides support for the move crew assisting when needed for relocation or delivery of equipment, move of archive boxes, furniture, inter-department relocation, special events inclusive of setup and takedown, delivery and set up of chairs, tables, stage, and dancefloor.

Minimum Qualifications

  • CA Driver's license in good standing
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 3 years experience in grounds maintenance and 1 year irrigation; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3 years experience performing the operations, services and activities of an irrigation system maintenance and repair program.
  • Experience using a computerized work order system.
  • Working knowledge of the operational characteristics of electrical systems related to landscape irrigation.
  • Skills in the methods, techniques, tools and materials used in the installation, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of landscaped irrigation systems.
  • Knowledge in calculating water pressure available in determining design of a sprinkler system.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of planting and maintaining turf, water schedules and fertilizers.
  • Knowledge of best practices in the design and maintenance of sustainable landscapes.
  • Knowledge of pest control laws and regulations regarding safe chemical application and pesticides used.
  • Knowledge of pruning standards and best practices.
  • Knowledge of weed identification and control methods used.
  • Knowledge and ability to perform semi-skilled and unskilled tasks in carpentry, electrical, plumbing and HVAC trades.
  • Knowledge in the identification, cultivation, and care of a broad diversity of ornamental and native landscape plants.
  • Skill and ability to remove, relocate or install accessories such as whiteboards and various dispenser, plumbing fixtures such as faucets, shower heads and sprinkler heads. Skills to use small hand tools for assembly & disassembly of furniture or equipment.
  • Skill and ability to clear plumbing stoppages.
  • Skill and ability to do preparatory work for painting of walls such as washing walls, filling in or smoothing surfaces, masking areas and setting up scaffolding.
  • Skill and ability to paint markings on asphalt floors or other similar surfaces.
  • Skills to operate various combinations of vehicles including a 26' Move Truck, Stake Bed and Dump Truck, using various transmissions, 5 speed, two axle, 4 speed two axle.
  • Skills to operator forklift, pallet jack, hand truck, and pulleys. Skills to operate truck safely with all Federal, State, County & city regulations and laws
  • Skill to read and understand blueprints and maintain simple records
  • Skill in the use of a variety of management practices to control ground squirrels, gophers, voles, and other rodents.
  • Skill to handle emergency situations and think clearly and prioritize under stress.
  • Skill to keep accurate record accounts of labor and time/material costs for each work order assigned.
  • Project management skills to manage work assignments; plan, track, manage projects and schedules.
  • Interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Organizational and time management skills to manage, track, and work on multiple and simultaneous complex tasks, following through on each as new ones are added, and meet multiple deadlines.

Department Overview

The Plant Operations & Maintenance (PO&M) Department is a 24-hour, seven day a week operation responsible for the operation, repair and maintenance of buildings, systems, and grounds at the UC Davis Health that includes 148 acres and structures that total 4 million GMSF. Plant Operations & Maintenance is one of the largest operations and maintenance support providers to clinical, administrative, research, SOM and SON departments throughout the Health System. UC Davis Health is one of several UC campuses that have their own cogeneration, central power plants. Cogeneration (Combined Heat and Power or CHP) is the simultaneous production of electricity and heat, both of which are used throughout the Medical Center Campus and is supported by Plant Operations & Maintenance 24x7x365. The Grounds Department is responsible for the beautification maintenance and upkeep of outdoor space including landscape, roadways, walkways and signage throughout the campus which directly impacts patients, visitors, students and staff experience while on the UCDH Campus.

Work Environment

Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System. This position participates in a bid process for shifts of grave, swing and weekend days based upon seniority in the shop. This position must be able to work overtime and on any shift that is assigned.
