Job SummaryThe Irrigation Specialist designs, installs, maintains, repairs, and schedules all irrigation system and water features on campus and the Missionary Training Center. He/she works directly with contractors and site inspectors through planning, execution, and project completion. He/she works with contractors and other shops to locate utilities on site as needed and to repair systems damaged during construction. He/she also has standby responsibilities for after-hours campus emergencies March through November; and participates in snow removal.Essential Functions - Skills can be learned through on-the-job training.1 *Safety, Public Relations, Vehicle Maintenance, and Inspections *Operate all equipment in a safe and effective manner to minimize the risk of injury and property damageWork with Campus, MTC, and church employees/visitors in a professional mannerOperate and maintain a clean university vehiclePerform daily pre and post trip inspectionsMaintain current LMS training schedule for crew2 *Irrigation Specialist *Design and install irrigation systems with an average 70% efficiency.Work directly with project planners, contractors and site inspectors in pre-construction meetings, plan reviews, project planning, execution and projects throughout construction to project completion.Understand how to read blueprints to properly design, install, maintain, and schedule sprinkler systems to efficiently water the grass, shrub and tree areas.Design, Install and maintain large scale water featuresCoordinate schedules with contractors in meetings and on site for installation of sleeves, main lines and landscape.Prepare cost estimates as neededFulfill service requests in a timely mannerUnderstanding of microclimates, plant type and water requirements, hydro zones, soil composition and soil analysis.Maintain minimal down time through continual maintenance of pumps, sensors, valves and filters. Respond to pump station alarms, controller alarms, valve shorts and restore functionality.Working knowledge of hydraulics including friction loss, PSI, head, and water velocity and effects of elevation for proper tr oubleshooting hydraulic problems.Install and maintain all types of piping such as copper, galvanized, PVC, HDPE etc.3 *Electrical requirements and responsibilities *Understand various wire sizes and voltages 24-110 volts, understand voltage draw/ resistance capacities, line loss and wire sizing charts.Understand wiring schematics to troubleshoot irrigation controller, wiring, and valve issues.Understand Pump schematics and voltages used for booster pump stations across campus to properly troubleshoot and maintain pumps, sensors, valves, and filters.Maintain minimal down time due to power outages and schedule maintenance.Use of computer aided drafting software (AutoCAD, Bluebeam)Project suggestions and contributions.Ability to read and understand utility drawings and blueprints to locate and mark all BYU owned utilities on campus (gas, water-potable, non-potable, chilled water, electrical low/high voltage, storm water, sewer and drain lines)4 *Construction and Heavy Equipment Operation *Ability to obtain a Class B CDL for operating commercial dump trucks.Operate heavy equipment such as loaders, track hoes, skid steers, small utility loaders, trenchers, assist with vacuum truck, etc.Supervise a 2-8-person crew and ensure a safe work environment5 *Standby Responsibilities Year-round *Contact and support for all campus emergencies March/November after business hours, this includes anything relevant to grounds, down trees, broken water lines (both secondary and culinary), various spills, graffiti etc.Assist and support Secondary Canal Infrastructure shareholders in emergencies while maintaining minimal down time April/October.6 *Snow Removal *Be on call to work with a team in assigned snow removal areas to clear walks, stairs, roads, plazas, crosswalks, ADA areas, parking lots, and as necessary, athletic fields.Fulfill snow removal duties in a safe and non-destructive manner, bearing in mind the needs and safety of the intended userEducation/ExperienceMinimum education/experience required:Level I : 1-2 years' experience in irrigation install/repairLevel II : 3+ years' experience in irrigation install/repair*Preferred: * Landscape Management Degree/3+ years' experience in irrigation install/repairSkills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications:Required Licenses/Certifications: (Or ability to obtain shorty after hire.)Level II will have and maintain at least three of the following certifications, including at least one IA CertificationIA Certified (CID,CIT,CIC, CLIA)HDPE Pipe Fusion certificationLeadership certification/trainingBackflow certificationQualified Water Efficient Landscaper (QWEL) or equivalent certificationHydropoint University/Weathertrak Optiflow CertificationClass B CDLRequired Abilities:Completing tasks & projects without direct supervisionCultivating relationships with university personnelSkilled project management/coordinationTraining & mentoring students/employeesMaintain positive attitude & good emotional intelligenceRequired Knowledge of:Campus & jobPump station components (pumps, filters, etc.)Marking underground utilitiesIrrigation hydraulics & componentsIrrigation scheduling/auditingBlueprints/plans for takeoffsPhysical RequirementsHeavy Work, Climbing, Kneeling, Standing, Pulling, Fingering, Grasping, Balancing, Crouching, Walking, Stooping, Reaching, Pushing, Seeing, Hearing, Talking, Tactile Sense, Repetitive motions, Visual Acuity (Color, depth perception, and field of vision), Lifting-Floor to waist-50Ibs, Lifting-Carry 20ft -50IbsUniversity VehiclesService truck and dump truckRiding trencher, excavators, loader, forklift, soil compactor, tractors, air compressor, and ATVElectric and gas power saws, drills, pumps, backflow test kit, power washer, hand blowers, location equipment, and various hand toolsWorking conditionsConfined space entry, extreme temperatures, wet/humid, noise mechanical, electrical, chemical, burns, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilationEmployee Class: Staff (Full-Time)Work Location: Provo CampusEnvironment: Frequent exposure to unfavorable conditions such as all-weather, or working in cramped, very dirty, or unpleasant quartersPhysical Exam Required: YPhysical Exam Details: Lift up to 50 pounds*Desired Start Date: * As soon as possible**Job C
