An IT support specialist, or information technology support specialist, provides technical assistance and support for computer systems, hardware, and software. They may work in a help desk setting, answering calls and emails from users, and troubleshooting problems. IT support specialists can work with internal clients, such as employees, or external customers. Their responsibilities may include:
- Analyzing and troubleshooting Assessing problems using diagnostic tools, determining the cause, and taking action to resolve them
- Installing and maintaining Helping with the planning, installation, and maintenance of computers, workstations, and servers
- Evaluating products Assessing the compatibility of computers, software, data storage, and accessories
- Tracking performance Using reports to monitor progress
- Providing instructions Teaching customers how to use business programs or troubleshoot household IT products
- Preparing documentation Writing operation instructions and documenting hardware and software updates
