Vale, OR Job Type: Full Time 40 hrs/wk Job Number: JCD 2022-10 Department: Sheriff's Office Opening Date: 10/03/2022 Closing Date: Continuous DescriptionThere will be a 10% pay increase effective 7/1/2024 GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES Work is performed to provide care and custody of adult prisoners and to maintain order and discipline among the prisoners of the Malheur County Jail. Employees in this classification are responsible for the operation of the jail on a 24-hour, 7 day a week basis, and the direct and indirect supervision of the inmates. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Work is performed under the general supervision from a Senior Corrections Officer or Corrections Sergeant. SUPERVISION EXERCISED Supervision is not normally a function of this class. Employees occupying position of this class may be assigned to train other employees. Essential Functions ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (The following description of duties may not be all inclusive and other duties may be assigned at the discretion of management). 1. Control access to jail facilities; maintain key and equipment control; operate and monitor surveillance and electronic security equipment; conduct security and inmate welfare checks; conduct searches; control contraband/inmate property; conduct emergency drills and inmate count. 2. Supervise inmate's movement; counsel inmates regarding their behavior in jail; supervise inmate program activities; maintain discipline; review and recommend classification and housing of inmates. 3. Conduct inmate status checks; monitor inmates to ensure that health standards are maintained; maintain activity schedules; supervise meal services to ensure all inmates receive all scheduled meals; schedule inmates for medical, dental and mental health care. 4. Book new inmates; confirm the arresting agency; oversee compliance with entry security procedures; conduct frisk/ and or strip search of inmates and remove personal property; searches and inventory personal property; confiscate illegal personal property; remove restraints and complete fingerprinting and photographing; assign initial custody classification, and release status; assign inmates to appropriate housing area, issue clothing and bedding. 5. Establish inmates release validity; initiate inmate movement to the appropriate area; verify the inmate identity and return personal clothing and property; collect county property; and insure the accurate completion of the release agreement. 6. Respond to jail emergencies including medical, minor or major inmate disturbances, failure of facility physical plant systems, escapes and fires and natural disasters. 7. Read and comply with department policies and procedures; write reports; enforce inmate rules; participate in training and collateral duty assignments. 8. Conduct security and perimeter checks; transport and supervise inmates outside of the jail; conduct emergency drills; and use mechanical restraints and/ or physical force as necessary. 9. Dispense prescribed medication; supervise inmates during recreation activities, on work projects, trusties working in the county, and visitation; and provide laundry exchange and commissary access. 10. Greet the public in person and by telephone; answer questions and inform the public about inmate welfare, jail procedures, visitation, and court procedures. 11. Supervise inmate on work projects within the jail and external community services and public works projects; and may monitor inmate in a variety of minimum custody settings. 12. Serve subpoenas to inmates; and warrants of arrest. 13. Appear in court as a witness. 14. Perform Courthouse Security as assigned. 15. Regular physical attendance at the employer's facility is required. 16. Perform related duties as assigned. Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be twenty-one years of age.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D certificate; required by DPSST
  • Valid Oregon State driver's license.
  • Complete Malheur County Sheriff's Office background investigation
  • Must pass a medical exam and psychological evaluation prior to appointment
  • Must be free of conviction of a crime other than a minor traffic violation
  • SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
    • Must be certifiable as a corrections deputy by the Oregon Department of Public Standards and Training.
    • Basic First Aid and CPR
    • This position requires the occasional use of a vehicle to conduct County business. Possession of a valid Drivers' License with a good driving history required. A safe and acceptable driving record per County policy must be maintained throughout course of employment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge: Knowledge of corrections practices in the care and treatment of prisoner in correctional institutions; knowledge of criminal law, the judicial system and statutes on jails; knowledge of booking and release procedures. Skill in: operating fingerprinting equipment; skill in the operation of photographic equipment; skill in the use of physical restraints; skill in the operation of firearms and defensive tactics. Ability to: operate photographic equipment; ability to keep accurate records; ability to gain the cooperation of the inmates; ability to handle difficult prisoners with patience and firmness; ability to use physical force when necessary; ability to move quickly and respond to emergencies; ability to deal tactfully with the public; ability to withstand verbal abuse; ability to work under emergency and stressful conditions; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with individuals, whether members of the public or coworkers, from diverse groups and backgrounds; ability to perform basic mathematical computations; ability to stand for long periods of time. Shift work, rotating schedules, work on holidays and over time are required. Physical Requirements: The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. The classification has a variety of physical requirements of varying degrees based on numerous differing work circumstances. Required physical activities include walking, standing, sitting, digital dexterity, talking, hearing ad seeing. A Corrections Deputy may be exposed to physically confrontive situations, personal danger and bio-hazardous materials. A Corrections Deputy will assist in emergency situations, and must maintain physical ability to deal with physical confrontive or combative situations including use of reasonable force up to and including deadly force. Required physical activities during those times are running, jumping, twisting, balancing, climbing, crawling, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, reaching, lifting, carrying, dragging, throwing, pushing/pulling both objects and people. A Corrections Deputy must be able to clearly distinguish and identify colors, safely drive a vehicle with unassisted vision, accurately discharge a firearm (either hand) with unassisted vision, clearly and successfully discriminate electronic, mechanical human sounds and operate required equipment in a safe and lawful manner for the protection/safety of the public, inmates, of self and of other employees.
