SUMMARY The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office (OPSO), New Orleans, Louisiana, provides residents' care, custody, control, and rehabilitation. The Jail Training Deputy (JTD) position for Jail Operations is located at the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office and reports to the leadership of Jail Operations. The incumbent will prepare the newly hired recruits to perform at an acceptable level and become an asset to Jail Operations. During this process, the JTD will train, observe, and evaluate the progress of each recruit. The Mission of each JTD is to give each recruit the utmost opportunity to succeed in their training, correct the recruit when mistakes are made, and maximize the safety of the recruit. The incumbent is an experienced pod deputy responsible for supervising residents, making decisions, solving problems, and managing behavior in the unit within the parameters of OPSO policies and procedures. JTDs are expected to set clear expectations with residents, use positive reinforcement techniques, hold residents accountable for their behavior, treat residents with respect and consideration, be fair, manage pods by walking and talking, identify and address resident concerns, be a source of information, encourage residents to take responsibility for themselves, plan and supervise unit activities, develop and measure personal goals for the unit, apply policies and procedures appropriately to achieve unit objectives, and effectively communicate among staff on shift, during shift change, with ranking supervisors and other jail staff. SALARY The salary for a selected applicant will be aligned accordingly and commensurate with the applicant's knowledge, skills, experience, certifications, and education requirements of the subject position. JOB RESPONSIBILITIESPrimary Job Duties & Responsibilities: Abide by federal, state, and local laws, including OPSO policies, procedures, and the current consent judgment. When assigned a recruit, will build a positive rapport with the recruit while ensuring they are familiar with all aspects of working in a correctional environment while following the ORLEANS PARISH SHERIFF'S OFFICE Office of Human Resources Job Description Page 2 of 2 curriculum outlined by the Training Division of the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office. Manage pod operations to ensure a safe and humane environment for all residents in custody and staff. Effectively manage resident discipline within the guidelines outlined in the policy. Respond to resident complaints and requests timely and professional. Ensuring that required security rounds are conducted timely and within policy. Ensuring incident reports are completed before the end of their tour of duty and that all incidents, including uses of force, are reported per policy. Preserves evidence in the event of an incident and ensures no one contaminates the crime scene. Provide honest feedback regarding the suitability of recruits to be successful within the jail operations environment. Participates in developing the training curriculum for recruits and ongoing training for current employees. REQUIREMENS, SKILLS, AND ABILITY A High School Diploma/GED. Minimum of 2 years of corrections experience (recommended). One year is required. P.O.S.T. Level 2 certification required. Proficient in report writing. Strong analytical skills and the ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities. Ability and willingness to take on challenging responsibilities. Good moral character. Possesses keen social awareness. High levels of integrity and confidentiality. Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to de-escalate in high-stress environments. Excellent teamwork skills. Must complete JTD training within six months of appointment. Must not have excessive absences within the six months before application. Must not have been the subject of formal discipline, resulting in a suspension from duty within the twelve months before application.
