Description Position Description: Position Summary The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is a diverse and prestigious research facility that plays a vital role in the study of the universe. At the NRAO, we have an employment opportunity for a part-time, 30-hour per week Janitor. Under minimal supervision, the Janitor will be responsible for cleaning office buildings, trash disposal, litter control, cleaning of lab spaces and other areas as assigned. What You Will Be Doing:
  • Cleaning offices, hallways, rest rooms, elevators, stairways, shops and other work areas, including sweeping, scrubbing, waxing, and polishing floors.
  • Washing windows, door panels, and sills.
  • Emptying wastebaskets and transporting trash and waste to disposal area.
  • Replenishing restroom and breakroom supplies.
  • May clean rugs, carpets, furniture, and draperies as required.
  • Dusting, spot cleaning walls and doors, cleaning and sanitizing telephones, door handles, light switches and other high-touch areas.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting restroom fixtures, mirrors, counters, floors, partitions and chrome.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting breakroom countertops, tables, chairs, coffee stations, sinks, refrigerators and microwaves.
  • May be required to record data such as property damage, unusual occurrences, and malfunctioning of machinery or equipment to supervisory staff.
  • Must be able to operate a vehicle, a valid driver's license is required.
  • Performing grounds keeping duties such as litter control, sweeping sidewalks, and trash collection and vehicle refueling as assigned.
  • Proactive compliance with NRAO and government safety policies and procedures in own work area is expected.
  • Required to secure gates, sound alarms or call police or fire department by telephone in case of fire or presence of unauthorized persons. Permits authorized persons to enter property. Must be able to communicate warnings safely.
  • May ensure security of all buildings and grounds.
  • Patrols the site for safety and security. Reports any unusual or suspicious activities on the site to supervisory staff. Examines doors and windows to determine that they are secure.
  • May watch for and report irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes, and security doors left unlocked.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee works both inside and outside, occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, and occasionally works at heights over five feet. The employee will work around sewage. The employee will work with various chemicals. Who You Are:
  • You have a High School diploma or GED
  • You have a minimum of 1 month of experience
  • Capable of working alone with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle; a valid Virginia driver's license is required.
  • Be safety sensitive
Additional Requirements:
  • CPR and First Aid certifications may be required

Physical Requirements The employee must be able to carry equipment and tools, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and operate a variety of tools and equipment. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to operate a vehicle to travel to on-site work areas. The employee must be able to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities include the ability to read labels and determine the identity and use of a variety of chemicals cleaners and solvents. The employee has some exposure to fumes from cleaners. Safety Sensitive The selected candidate must successfully pass a post-offer, pre-employment/pre-placement drug screen. Failure to pass the screen will disqualify the candidate from employment consideration for a period of six months from the date of the results.
