Position Description Paralegal Anticipated Starting Salary Range: $63,000 - $80,000 Starting Salary Commensurate with Qualifications and Experience The Commissioner's Office of the State Corporation Commission (SCC or Commission) seeks a professional and detail-oriented Paralegal. The Paralegal will proof and edit legal documents by synthesizing information, recognizing opportunities or issues, and recommending changes. The selected candidate for this position will provide legal support to the SCC's three Commissioners, to include the following: tracking scheduled Commission hearings and associated deadlines; assisting the Commissioners before, during, and after hearings; conducting discreet research assignments; attending meetings and taking detailed notes; proofreading and editing memoranda, orders, and other legal documents; drafting legal documents and preparing reports; and performing related work as requested. This position will allow for some telework, although the successful candidate will be expected to be in office at least two days per week and be available for in-person hearings. Qualifications Preferred qualifications for this position include five or more years of related paralegal experience, with some experience drafting documents and conducting legal research, and completion of a degree or certificate program in paralegal studies. Experience using Westlaw and/or Lexis Nexis is preferred. Some knowledge of legal research methods and terminology, case management, and legal research systems is essential. The ideal candidate for this position will have strong attention to detail and will excel at proofreading and copyediting documents. The selected candidate for this position should have strong written and verbal communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills and a professional demeaner; be a collaborative team player; be confidential and discreet; and be experienced in the use of a personal computer and its applications. The ability to apply the State Corporation Commission Rules of Practice and the Rules of the Supreme Court of Virginia is essential.
