DescriptionJourneyman LinemanDept.: Light Reports To: Foreman-LightClassification:Non-Exempt, Bargaining UnitShift:Full Time, Mon-Fri, or asneeded Wage:Per CBAJob Summary:This position is accountable for performing routine duties in handling electric line materials, overhead and underground electrical work involved in the construction, maintenance and extension of power lighting and signal systems; also, does related work as required. This position involves the responsibility for willing and efficient performance of assigned tasks. This position is under the direct supervision of a Group Leader and the general supervision of the Foreman or designee who may, from time-to-time, review said work, methods of results and give general instructions on assignments. Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Mentors and educates apprentice lineman
- 24-hour call to handle emergencies in all weather conditions
- Handle customer services, line maintenance, line outages, power outages and emergency problems as they arise
- Sets meters, makes load checks and provides other customer services
- Connects and disconnects electrical service
- Answers trouble calls
- Works overhead and underground with electrical hot line equipment and tools
- Works on secondary circuits and on primary distribution circuits
- Works on energized primary circuits
- Works on congested energized distribution circuits
- Performs electrical hot line work on poles in high places and underground
- Builds and installs three-phase transformer banks
- Connects transformer banks, fuses transformers, and installs wires and parts
- Identifies location of important circuits and cutout fuses
- Handles a variety of emergency problems during and after storms
- Maintains live lines by either climbing poles or working from an aerial bucket or working in a manhole on underground primary and secondary wires
- Fuse's link cut outs and lightning arresters
- Installs steel pins and insulators
- Strings primary wires and installs secondary brackets and secondary spools.
- Strings secondary lines and house services and makes connections
- Erects new streetlights and repairs existing streetlights
- Strings underground services to houses
- Splices underground secondary and primary wires
- Maintains high voltage lines
- Repairs broken wires and loose connections
- Install underground wires and transformers
- Conducts both routine and emergency repairs of all distribution equipment
- Replaces faulty meters
- Work in underground vaults consisting of 23,000 volt, 7,200 volts and 4,160 repaired and spliced cables de energized
- Work in confined spaces such as manholes and have knowledge of all safety rules and precautions to perform work safely
- Install high voltage junction boxes
- Perform all splicing and terminations on high voltage power cable
- Construct hi voltage switch pole switches and make all power cable terminations and connections
- Diagnose and or replace drivers on new LED lighting
- Assist in the assembly and erection of electrical substation structures and equipment
- Flags traffic as necessary
- Performs rubber glove work and all other duties of electrical lineman
- Inspect rubber gloves, sleeves, bucket liners, protective hoses, and blankets
- Practice and be prepared to perform pole top rescue and bucket rescue to save the life of a coworker
- Marks underground high line, primary and secondary
- Laying out hot primary on hot arms
- Sets poles in hot primary and secondary
- Installs and maintains accessories related to electrical infrastructure
- Properly clean, stock and inspect all trucks
- Attend safety meeting learning new rules, regulations, and safe work practices
- This classification will be cross trained and required to perform all departmental duties
- Any other work given within reason from the administration of the department
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Knowledge of the practices, methods, equipment, and tools used in the electrical theory
- Skilled in the proper use of Lineman's tools, equipment and materials, thorough knowledge of occupational hazards connected with the work and necessary safety precautions
- The ability to climb poles and towers, perform manual labor and physical stamina to withstand work during adverse weather conditions
- Must know how to operate the HI Pot/ Thumper/ Radar machine to locate and repair high voltage URD
- Knowledge of the safe and proper use of rope, knots, and rope rigging
- Ability to calculate proper fuse and conductor sizes using algebraic equations
- Ability to calculate residential load to determine conductor sizes, fuse sizes and equipment size
- Knowledge of proper grounding procedures to perform work on de-energized power lines safely
- Knowledge in the use of hot sticks to perform work on energized power lines
- Know how to read prints
- Keep up to date on the current rules, tool use, and safety regulations and work practices associated with this industry

- Ability to make decisions in accordance with the ordinances, regulations, and department policies and procedures
- Maintain confidentiality of all information obtained
- Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with other employees and the general public
Requirements and Qualifications:
- High School diploma (GED equivalent) required
- Must have valid CDL- Class B license
- Must have First Aid/CPR Certification
- Must be able to pass Fit-For-Duty physical, upon request
- Some vocational training in electricity, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities, preferred.
- Completion of a 4-year apprenticeship as an Apprentice Lineman with Northwest Lineman College or other accredited facility
- Required to wear FR (fire-retardant) clothing while working on energized power lines (These clothes are extremely uncomfortable in warm weather)
- Must be able to operate all trucks & equipment, including the digger/pole truck, forklift, etc.
- Must have completed an accredited climbing school
Essential Functions:
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions
- Able to communicate via phone, radio and in person and exchange accurate information in such situations
- Able to sit, stand, lift, bend, walk, etc.
- Able to lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to handle emergencies in all weather conditions at varying times
