Salary: $24.02 - $36.41 Hourly Location : Bellingham, WA 98225 Job Type: Full-Time Job Number: J900 - 080924 Department: Juvenile Court Opening Date: 10/14/2024 Closing Date: 10/27/2024 11:59 PM Pacific Summary Whatcom County is currently recruiting for a Juvenile Detention Officer I or II, DOQ. Whatcom County Superior Court is an independent branch of government and personnel employed under the judicial branch of government. The positions are in accordance with GR 29. Under GR 29, the Presiding Judge is responsible for the daily operations of the Court, which includes working conditions, hiring, discipline, and termination decisions. Juvenile Detention is a safe and secure environment for youth who have been arrested pending a court appearance or who have been sentenced to serve time after a court appearance. The Juvenile Detention Officer position serves a critical role ensuring a humane, safe and rehabilitative environment for juvenile offenders. This position has a bona fide occupational qualification: must be filled by a female candidate and must be 21+ years of age. Key Duties Include:
  • Monitoring the detention facility security to ensure the safety of juveniles and staff
  • Directing and/or participating in activities and programs for juveniles
  • Escorting juveniles to appointments, as well as overseeing visits from authorized visitors
  • Documenting observations of daily behaviors, including writing reports

  • MCBA- Range 112.0/112.1 OR 140.0/140.1
Hiring rate depends on qualifications. This position receives annual pay increases to the next step in the associated salary range (apx. 3.8%) subject to satisfactory performance, in addition to any negotiated Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA). Qualifications Juvenile Detention Officer I:
  • Requires a high school diploma or GED AND two years of experience working with youth or two years of experience in residential treatment and supervision, military security or supervision OR
  • Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or closely related field.
Juvenile Detention Officer II:
  • Requires two years of successful performance as a Whatcom county Juvenile Detention Officer I or in a similar position with another detention facility.
Desired:
  • Experience with at-risk youth and security.
  • A bachelor's degree in social sciences or criminology.
Special Requirements:
  • Driving record that meets County standards.
  • Possess a valid driver's license at time of hire and throughout employment.
  • Pass polygraph exam.
  • Background check must meet County criteria.
