KIPP NC is a network of eight high-performing, college-preparatory public charter schools providing an academically rigorous and joyous school experience to more than 3,500 students in grades K-12 in Charlotte, Durham, Gaston, and Halifax. KIPP NC supports several thousand alumni on their journey to and through high school, college, and career.
KIPP NC is building on a rich tradition of academic excellence and relentless fight for social justice present from the founding of both KIPP ENC and KIPP Charlotte. KIPP ENC is the second oldest KIPP region in the nation. In its 20 years of operation, KIPP ENC has been a cornerstone for students and families in rural Gaston and Halifax, operating two primary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. Over the past five years, it grew to serve even more students by opening up a middle school in Durham, an urban center in the center part of the state. KIPP Charlotte, which grew out of the strong traditions and academics of KIPP ENC, has supported students and families for the past 13 years, operating one primary school and one middle school in the largest city in North Carolina.

The Role
Reporting to the Facilities Manager and accountable to the Director of Operations (DoO), the Custodial Supervisor is responsible for the assignment and direct supervision of custodial employees in maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of all buildings, offices, classrooms, laboratories, furnishings and equipment as well as building entrances. The Custodial Supervisor is also responsible for training new employees in proper custodial procedures for the use of manually operated tools, electrically-powered machines, cleaning compounds, solvents and chemicals.

Supervises the activities of custodial technicians directly by using both verbal and written instructions.
Ensures that custodial services meet the needs of the school by coordinating normal and as-needed unique work schedules to compensate for changing priorities, special custodial projects, scheduled events and custodial technician absences.
Ensures quality of custodial services by inspecting work and instituting corrective measures when necessary.
Instructs custodial technicians in the proper methods and use of materials and equipment for safe and efficient work performance.
Assists in hiring qualified employees, evaluating performance to meet established standards and performs annual performance evaluations.
Ensures custodial technicians understand school policies and procedures regarding expected employee conduct and performance through policy and procedure review, as well as any necessary corrective actions such as verbal and written warnings.
Ensures that custodial personnel have the equipment and supplies necessary to perform custodial services by issuing supplies as needed, completing request form(s) for replacement items, and storing the supplies and equipment in a secure storage facility.
Evaluates new custodial supplies and equipment by conducting testing of such items and recommending their appropriate use.
Advises the Facilities Manager on the condition of College buildings and facilities by conducting regular inspections of those areas and reporting the results of the inspections with particular emphasis on needed repairs.
Ensures that administrative records and reports regarding custodial personnel are accurate and current by reviewing employee time cards or monthly time sheets and monitoring employee absences.
Performs daily custodial duties as needed in support of the departmental mission.
Provides continuity of custodial services under emergency conditions or unique circumstances by performing custodial duties directly related to the emergency conditions or as the situation dictates.
Assists with ensuring that specified contract services are provided by the contractor by inspecting the work performed and advising the immediate supervisor when shortcomings or other deficiencies are noted.
Provides continuity of supervision and leadership by assuming the duties and responsibilities of other Custodial Supervisors as required by special circumstances.
Contributes to a positive work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with the diverse student, faculty and staff population at the College.
Remain competent and current by attending training and/or courses required by the immediate supervisor.
Contributes to the overall success of the school by performing other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Surroundings/Environment:
The scope of the position requires responding to custodial emergencies or other unforeseen situations around-the-clock and may also require exposure to and use of chemical compounds for cleaning which may be hazardous and/or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, application and use are not properly followed.
Physical Effort:
Requires the ability to inspect the cleanliness of facilities. Must be able to move throughout assigned areas. Requires the ability to lift and carry custodial supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires a full range of physical motion in order to operate manual and electrically-powered cleaning equipment.
Scheduling:
This is a full-time position. Normal working hours are 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday; however, must be available to work occasionally on weekends and evenings. Must also be able to work during or after inclement weather anytime, including weekends.

* Associate's Degree preferred, or at least four (4) years of experience in custodial services.
* Two to four years of custodial supervisory experience is highly preferred.
* A thorough knowledge of cleaning procedures, equipment and supplies is required.
* A valid driver's license is required.Demonstrated management and leadership skills (e.g. at least 2 years managing a team or multiple large projects).
* Pass Criminal Background Check.
