Overview:

The Lab Customer Support understands and applies knowledge of specimen requirements when receiving specimens. Prepares specimens for testing as applicable. This can include: receiving, labeling centrifuging and plating. Answers telephone calls and assists caller with any questions or concerns regarding specimen collection. Adheres to laboratory and safety polices including compliance with all safety , accreditation and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities:
  • Accept and electronically receive laboratory specimens of blood, body fluids, urine, stool and swabs etc. for all sections of the laboratory.
  • Understands and applies knowledge of test specimen requirements and utilizes available reference materials to ensure that all specimens are collected correctly by staff. Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the appropriate healthcare provider and notifying fellow staff and/or a Laboratory Supervisor, Director, or Manager of unresolved orders.
  • Process, centrifuge, plate or deliver specimens in a timely manner to the appropriate department for testing.
  • Aliquots, processes, labels, and stores samples for outside reference laboratories.
  • Is capable of identifying pre-analytical problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify a Laboratory Supervisor, Director or Manager.
  • Communication, cooperation and assistance rendered in a timely and courteous manner to all fellow workers including hospital and medical staff. Communicates any concerns or issues to Lab Administration.
  • Provide instruction and training in theory, technical skills, safety protocols, and laboratory procedures to students and employees.
  • Follows and reviews general laboratory, safety, and department policies and procedures.
  • Answers telephone calls and assists individual with question and/or concern by following laboratory policies and procedures and consistently uses good telephone etiquette and gives and receives accurate information to and from caller.
Qualifications:

High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

Preferences: 1 year of experience working in a healthcare setting preferred.

Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
