Basic Function:

Under the supervision of the Undergraduate Teaching Lab Manager, be responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of several undergraduate Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) laboratory courses including, but not limited to, microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, biotechnology, and medical laboratory science. Responsible for inventorying supplies, chemicals and reagents, assisting with the maintenance of laboratory equipment and ensuring efficient and safe laboratory operation. Responsible for the general upkeep of the teaching laboratories in addition to associated preparation and storage rooms.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for preparing course materials such as media, reagent aliquots, and sterile supplies; training and overseeing the work of undergraduate laboratory assistants and assisting with the maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Responsible for laboratory prep work, including the set-up and breakdown of individual stations.

Responsible for managing lab-associated inventory of basic equipment and consumables, determining if/when supplies need to be ordered, and working with the Lab Manager to place orders.

Responsible for laboratory clean-up, weekly bench-top disinfection, and hazardous and non-hazardous waste disposal.

Responsible for the general upkeep of the lab spaces and associated prep and storage rooms.

Assist and direct undergraduate helpers with cleaning, organizing, and miscellaneous prep work.

Direct and assist Teaching Assistants when necessary.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform additional duties as required.

Licenses, Tools, and Equipment:

Personal computers, printers, word processing and database/spreadsheet software such as Microsoft 365, and equipment routinely used in cell and molecular laboratories (30 pounds).

Required Qualifications

Required:

1. Bachelor's degree in a life sciences-related field.

2. Demonstrated training or working experience with live organisms (prokaryotic and/or eukaryotic), cells, or tissue culture.

3. Demonstrated working knowledge of procedures routinely applied in performing experiments in cell and molecular laboratories (such as aseptic technique, cell culturing, and safety and disposal of biological and chemical waste).

4. Demonstrated ability to accurately follow detailed written and verbal instructions (as they pertain to the safe and effective operation of cell and molecular labs).

5. Demonstrated strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

6. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.

7. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred:

1. Demonstrated working knowledge of the operation, care, and maintenance of equipment used in cell and molecular labs.

2. Demonstrated ability to plan and maintain inventories of equipment and supplies for the safe and effective operation of cell and molecular labs.

3. Demonstrated ability to lift laboratory equipment and supplies of approximately 30 lbs.
