LAB MANAGER & TECHNICIAN
The Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Imaging, led by Dr. Justin Taraska, Ph.D., in the Biochemistry and Biophysics Center, National Heart Lung and Blood Institute is seeking a skilled and motivated Lab Manager & Technician to join our dynamic research team. This dual-role position requires a background in laboratory management, microscopy, and biochemistry. The ideal candidate will ensure smooth lab operations, maintain cutting-edge imaging and microscopy facilities, and contribute to ongoing research projects.
PRIMARY DUTIES
Lab Management
- Oversee daily laboratory operations, ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and research standards.
- Manage and procure lab supplies, maintain equipment, supplies, and chemical inventory.
- Train and supervise staff, students, and visiting researchers on lab protocols and instrument use.
- Develop and ensure laboratory safety policies and risk assessments.
- Maintain detailed digital records of laboratory activities.
- Participate in lab meetings.
- Ensure laboratory space management and organization.
Technical Expertise
- Operate and maintain electron microscopy and advanced imaging systems, including routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration.
- Prepare biological samples for electron microscopy and other imaging techniques.
- Optimize imaging protocols to achieve high-quality results and implement new methodologies.
- Develop and support biochemistry experiments, including protein purification, enzyme assays, and molecular biology techniques.
- Support mammalian and bacterial cell culture work.
Research Support
- Collaborate with researchers to design and execute experiments.
- Provide technical expertise and guidance in microscopy, imaging, and biochemistry applications.
- Contribute to scientific publications, presentations, reviews, and grant application.
REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field.
- Experience in lab management.
Technical Skills
- Expertise in operating and maintaining electron microscopes and imaging equipment (e.g., TEM, high vacuum coating systems, fluorescence microscopy).
- Proficiency in sample preparation techniques for electron microscopy.
- Experience with biochemistry methods such as DNA cloning, protein preparation, western blotting, and gel electrophoresis.
Soft Skills
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Problem-solving mindset and adaptability to a dynamic research environment.
