GENERAL SUMMARY AND PURPOSE:
Plans, manages, coordinates and supervises the activities of a section (s) of the clinical laboratory, such as Chemistry, Hematology, Transfusion Service, Microbiology, Histology/Cytology, POCT, Phlebotomy, Processing, Laboratory Information and School(s) of Medical Technology including all shifts and hours. Has responsibility for quality and quantity of work, procedures, methods, costs, and personnel of the sections.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or equivalent certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) required, or certification as a Histotechnologist or Cytotecnologist by a recognized agency preferred.
Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology or Health Related Science field required. Specialty certification for the specific laboratory section (s) preferred. 3 years of experience in a specialty area (s) preferred. Must have experience in human relations, communications and management skills
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Organization's Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions. Hires, trains, orients, and promotes teamwork and mentors department colleagues. Plans, prepares and coordinates work schedules to provide adequate coverage and efficient use of team to maintain high department productivity. Effectively prioritizes work within the assigned department to maintain maximum efficiency.
Plans, develops, prepares and maintains assigned procedure manuals according to regulatory requirements. Ensures that department or shift personnel provide accurate and timely testing results in accordance with laboratory standards. Ensures that QC testing and proficiency testing is performed, recorded and evaluated according to established guidelines and that out-of-control results are resolved in a timely manner. Develops and/or maintains a quality assurance program that meets all the requirements of applicable accrediting agencies.
Effectively communicates and works cooperatively with pathologists, laboratory manager, co-workers, nurses, clinicians and the units to ensure the quality of the laboratory testing and optimum performance of department. Effectively communicates and works cooperatively with nursing units and physician offices, the laboratory operations director, and the laboratory medical director to evaluate requests for new tests. Maintains department in accordance with regulatory requirements before, during and after all regulatory inspections.
Performs and monitors performance evaluations and competency levels of appropriate staff other supervisory duties including, but not limited to, performance evaluations and mentoring, motivating, counseling and terminating employees. Responsible for monitoring and ordering supplies for department.
Monitors patient satisfaction with emphasis on continual improvement of the laboratory experience which includes quality, accuracy, billing and timeliness of services. Ability to interact on a daily basis with laboratory clerical staff, other department staff, outside billing and insurance agencies, coroners, funeral home personnel, department coordinators, department director, medical staff and physician office staff. Maintains department employee records at JCAHO and CAP standards. Must possess human relations, communications, and management skills. Collaborate with other service departments as needed to improve patient flow and work processes.
