The primary job function of the Lab Technician Assistant - Physician Office is to perform venipunctures and other specimen collections for Laboratory testing. Performs and processes electrocardiograms. Performs non-complex diagnostic testing under the supervision of Lab Manager. Prepares specimens for transport. Performs other duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONSEducation:•High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required•Basic chemistry and biology are preferredLicensure:•Phlebotomy certification preferred•BLS within 90 days of hire requiredExperience:•Three to six months of laboratory experience preferred•Previous phlebotomy experience preferredJOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONSThe following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time. 1. Identifies self and department and explains the procedure to be performed to the patient.2. Verifies patient identification. Performs phlebotomies including venipunctures and fingersticks on adults and children/infant heelsticks.3. Follows all safety and infection control policies when performing procedures.4. Labels, dates, and processes obtained specimens.5. Centrifuges specimens. Aliquots specimens for testing when appropriate.6. Processes microbiology specimens as required.7. Runs collection lists. Prepares laboratory pendings and specimens for transport to other sections and to reference laboratories.8. Performs and processes electrocardiograms.9. Cleans and stocks work area as needed.10. Prepares and labels simple solutions for use in diagnostic testing.11. Performs clerical and computer functions as needed.12. Obtains accurate patient demographic and insurance information. Obtains signed consent for treatment from patient.13. Performs a quick registration in the Laboratory Computer System.14. Orders laboratory/phlebotomy supplies as needed.15. Performs non-complex testing physiochemical analysis and occult blood testing on biological specimens.16. Performs and documents Quality Control and daily instrument maintenance.17. Communicates needs of the physician office to the laboratory management team.18. Participates in training and orientation of new employees and students.19. Assists in completion of the nursing procedures of the patient and documents appropriately into the patient's medical record. Such as: - Assists with intake assessment of patients and documents appropriately on patient record. - Notifies physician if immediate or potential loss of life or limb seen in intake assessment. - Accurately obtains and documents vital signs. - Assists in completion of the nursing procedures of the patient and documents appropriately into the patient's medical record. - Assists other health team members in providing the plan of care. - Assists with evaluating the patient's response to the plan of care. - Operates wheelchairs, carts, beds, and transports patients. - Assists physician/nursing staff with orthopedic procedures safely and accurately (i.e., applies, slings, measure crutches). - Verifies orders and stock levels at the facility20. Demonstrates positive, supportive behavior to members of healthcare team, patient and families, through effective communication skills, appearance, and professional demeanor.21. Demonstrates ability to respond to changing workload related to patient census, ability to rapidly problem solve and set priorities.22. Responds to crisis in a calm, efficient manner, directing other concisely.23. Assists with completion of nursing assessment of the patient and documents appropriately into medical record24.
