POSITION TITLE: Laboratory Technician II, Natural Sciences

DEPARTMENT: Natural Sciences

PRIMARY LOCATION: Fall River; other Bristol locations (Taunton, New Bedford, Attleboro) as needed.

POSITION STATUS: This is a full-time, benefitted, AFSCME, 37.5 hours per week, 52 weeks per year position. Although laboratory support is needed primarily during the day, evening and weekend support may be required occasionally.

REPORTS TO: Dean of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)

SALARY: $57,223.66 annually*

* Appointments from outside the bargaining unit begin at Step 1.

STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The College is seeking a reliable and organized individual with a strong science background to provide laboratory support services to Bristol students and faculty in the performance of scientific and research experiments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Provides lab set-ups for chemistry, biology, microbiology and other sciences.

* Dismantles laboratory set-ups and cleans labs, glassware, equipment, and stockroom areas.

* Inventories supplies

* Performs minor repairs on lab equipment

* Maintains prep room and storeroom cleanliness

* Attends scheduled lab support meetings under the direction of the Laboratory Coordinator

* Responsible for weekly eyewash testing, updating chemical laboratory and other duties necessary for OSHA compliance

* Prepares solutions and growth media for instructional laboratories

* Monitors safety practices in the student laboratory and recommend corrective action when necessary.

* Maintains documentation and records of laboratory safety practices as necessary

* Works with appropriate personnel in ensuring the proper identification, storage, handling and disposing of chemicals and medical waste.

* Demonstrates a sense of professionalism and consistently reflects Bristol's core values while interacting with members of the Bristol community.

* Focuses on the Commonwealth's Equity Agenda by applying related best practices throughout all job functions.

* Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

NOTE: Unless otherwise noted, all required qualifications must be met by date of hire.

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in laboratory work in a recognized clinical, medical, hospital, chemical, water quality, public health, biological, bacteriological, marine sciences or materials testing laboratory, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. An Associate's degree or higher with a major in medical technology chemistry, bacteriology, food science and technology, environmental science, chemical or environmental engineering, wastewater technology, oceanography or the biological sciences may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.

II. The successful completion of one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, education toward a degree at a recognized medical or dental school may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.

III. The successful completion of training in a recognized school or hospital course, or an American Medical Association (AMA) approved training program for laboratory technicians or medical technologists may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

* Manual dexterity

* Experience providing laboratory support services in chemical and/or biological lab settings.

* Ability to supervise and delegate responsibilities.

* Knowledge of lab support requirements in one or more of the following areas: chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, general biology, environmental science, including:

* General laboratory testing techniques and methods

* Calibration and adjustment techniques as applied to laboratory equipment

* Properties and characteristics of chemicals, acids and materials used in a laboratory

* Techniques used in the handling and transportation of laboratory specimens

* Sanitation and sterilization methods

* Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures including hazardous waste collection and storage

* Computer skills in Microsoft Office.

* Demonstrated ability to:

* Follow oral and written instructions.

* Gather information through observation and by examining records and documents.

* Maintain accurate records

* Communicate effectively in oral expression and in writing.

* Establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.

* Deal tactfully with others.

* Exercise sound judgment.

* Work in a team setting.

* Reliable transportation in order to travel to and from meetings, trainings, or campus and community locations as required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

* Ability to communicate in a language in addition to English, with a preference for Portuguese or Spanish.
