The University of Virginia's Center for Comparative Medicine is seeking Laboratory Animal Diagnostic Technologists. The Laboratory Animal Diagnostic Technologist plays a crucial role in the health and welfare of laboratory animals through diagnostic testing and technical support. This position involves conducting various laboratory procedures, maintaining high standards of quality control, and contributing to research initiatives.
The mission of the Center for Comparative Medicine is to support biomedical research and teaching that utilizes laboratory animals. The Center does this in a manner which promotes the policies set by the Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC) whose charge is to oversee compliance by personnel at the University of Virginia with federal regulations and guidelines.
Duties include:
* Perform basic laboratory tests, including PCR, ELISA, and hematology assays (including for the health monitoring and quarantine diagnostic programs).
* Perform necropsy procedures, including sample collection, documenting findings, and tissue trimming.
* Operate and maintain basic blood analyzers.
* Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
* Participate in technical research support.
* Participating in teaching and academic responsibilities for visiting trainees/students.
* Support the development and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
* Assuring compliance with the USDA, NIH Policy, and AAALAC regulations and standards.
* Any other related activities seen fit by the Assistant Director, Comparative Pathology & Veterinary Diagnostics.
Minimum Requirements:
* Education: Bachelor's degree
* Experience: 2 years of experience; 4 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.
* Vaccination: This position requires compliance with UVA Health Policy OCH-002.
Physical Demands:
Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently traveling/bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids, and infectious disease.
