Job Role Summary
The Laboratory Applications Support Specialist is responsible for the daily functions of the laboratory instrumentation and application interfaces, including operation, maintenance and trouble-shooting issues. Provides second level support as a broad clinical subject matter expert to resolve incidents or fulfill requests received from the laboratory sections or other hospital services and assists with new and upgraded application testing and implementation for the organization. Other functions include resolving billing issues and managing laboratory change control requests. Manages maintenance of hospital specific dictionaries and provides input to and customizes Laboratory Information System (LIS) policies and procedures, training, and best practices. Works with the Epic Beaker team members to implement standardization, utilization, integration and optimization plans for clinical applications. Works with SCC and Blood Bank team to assist with SoftBank.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
* Works with the Epic Beaker team and laboratory management to maintain an efficient LIS structure to support the operations of the department. Assists in the implementation of new systems and applications by gathering information for new test builds, submitting modifications for current tests and testing upgrades to the LIS while maintaining existing systems. Identifies, investigates and resolves LIS related problems
* Performs billing of esoteric tests on patient accounts and reviews charge deletion reports in Epic. Requests creation and modification of charge codes for new and modified laboratory tests in nThrive. Monitors and maintains charge codes for all internal and external laboratory tests. Ensures all laboratory charges are routed to the proper revenue and cost centers
* Assists with the installation, maintenance and operation of all laboratory interfaces. Maintains and monitors Data Innovations (DI) middleware servers for issues, testing, upgrades and modifications. Assists IHIE with resolving laboratory report interface exceptions
* Monitors Blood Bank work queues for interface errors and issues. Maintains Unity Real Time and GEM Web Plus server applications and assists with RALS server issues
* Ensures continuous regulatory compliance for the LIS portion of all laboratory accrediting agency standards. Collects, analyzes and evaluates validation data. Works with laboratory management to create and manage LIS policies and procedures
* Supports and assists with setting and achieving departmental goals. Assists with the coordination of assigned LIS initiatives and provides frequent status reports
* Maintains a customer focused approach in resolving Epic issues with other departments and their interaction with Beaker.
* Ensures Administrative Director and/or Medical Director (or section Medical Director, as appropriate) is informed of potential or existing problems with regulatory, technical or operational issues or customer services problems
* Performs other job related duties as assigned
Job Requirements
* Bachelor's or Associate's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university (Foreign degrees must be assessed for U.S. equivalency) in Clinical Laboratory Science or related field
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
* Minimum of 2 years clinical laboratory experience required
* Coursework in information technology (IT) or experience with a Laboratory Information System preferred
* Experience working with Epic/Beaker, DI, and RALS ideal. Training will be provided as needed.
