RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must have been legal residents of New York State for at least FOUR months immediately preceding the date of the test. Pursuant to subdivision 4a of Sec. 23 of the Civil Service Law, preference may be given to successful candidates who have been legal residents of the municipality to which the appointment is to be made for at least FOUR months preceding the date of the written test.
This is a provisional appointment. Selected candidate will need to sit, pass and be eligible on the next available Rensselaer County Civil Service Exam for Laboratory Assistant in order to be considered for permanent appointment.
Applications are being accepted for the following immediate vacancies on the staff of Hudson Valley Community College's Aeronautical Technical Institute, located at the Albany International Airport, Albany, NY. Hudson Valley Community College is seeking an individual to serve as a Laboratory Assistant. HVCC ATI is a Certificated Part 147 Aviation Mechanic Technician School (AMTS) at the Albany International Airport and is looking add a Laboratory Assistant to assist AMTS instructors.

Position Description:
Assists instructors and other staff with laboratory maintenance at the Aeronautical Technical Institute, which is located at the Albany International Airport. Manages operations and maintenance of the Aeronautical Technology Institute laboratory. Maintains training boards, laboratory equipment, and mock training airframes. Responsible for organizing and cleaning the laboratory and storage spaces. Performs clerical work as needed including curriculum writing assistance for the instructors, assisting students as needed during lab time and ordering supplies and equipment as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated prior employment relating to mechanical aptitude and administrative/clerical work related to facilities or equipment maintenance. Proficiency with Microsoft Office - Word, Outlook & Excel. Demonstrated excellent writing, mathematical, and analytical skills and an ability to work independently. Must be a skilled communicator, both orally and in written form, and possess exceptional interpersonal skills to handle high level internal and public contact. A high degree of organizational skill and attention to detail is required as well as the ability to cope with simultaneous and competing work demands is also required. Must be able to obtain and hold a TSA SIDA airport security badge.
Preferred Qualifications: Associate's degree and two (2) or more years of paid work experience in a maintenance setting with administrative collateral duties. Aviation experience or fleet vehicle maintenance experience is also desired. Ability to work with, understand, and interpret the requirements of an aircraft maintenance education program and a desire to obtain an Aircraft Airframe and Powerplant Certificate is preferred.

The Laboratory Assistant position is located primarily at HVCC's ATI at the Albany International Airport. The selected individuals will assist the Director, Lead Instructor, and Instructors in the development, maintenance, and instruction of the FAA accepted curriculum.
The applicant will report to the Director and/or Lead Instructor of HVCC's Aeronautical Technical Institute (ATI). Responsibilities and position duties include:
* Monitoring lab activities for safe working conditions, with the authority and responsibility to immediately stop any activity that is unsafe in any way, reporting safety concerns to the Lead Instructor and ATI Director;
* Maintaining an updated list of HAZMAT and regularly sharing this inventory with the HVCC Environmental Health & Safety Office;
* Inspecting, maintaining, and repairing tools, training boards and aircraft for wear or other defects;
* Preparing and maintaining the laboratory and assisting instructors as requested during use of the laboratory;
* Organizing and maintaining the cleanliness and safety of storage areas and laboratories;
* Organizing and maintaining general departmental equipment records, aviation maintenance manuals, service bulletins, repair logs, and maintaining a running inventory on tools, consumables other items, training boards, and aircraft both in electronic and hard copy format;
* Monitoring on-hand consumable stock and coordinating with the ATI's Lead Instructor to ensure adequate supplies of tools and consumable materials is on-hand to support upcoming instruction;
* Assisting faculty and students during lecture and lab including printing documents as needed.
* Using Microsoft Office Suite for recording, tracking, and execution of various departmental functions and activities, such as curriculum review, program audits, and general clerical and office duties;
* Preparing routine and yearly supply orders for materials requested by faculty and staff, preparing for and executing bidding procedures when appropriate;
* Unpacking and inventorying deliveries to the ATI;
* Rotating perishable items while maintaining quality control;
* Monitoring the disposal of waste materials, insuring conformity to environmental standards;
* Performing other duties as assigned relevant to the success of the Aeronautical Technical Institute (ATI) and Hudson Valley Community College.
This is a full-time 12-month, 40-hour work week position with an hourly rate of $23.90. Start date is immediate.
