Assists the health care team in providing health care service with efficiency and quality in a caring environment.Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 12:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with rotating holiday and weekend coverage. Performs patient procedures to include phlebotomy and other specimen collection, while adhering to departmental policies and procedures, to ensure the integrity of patient and sample identification and quality.
  • Patients are identified by verifying the patient wristband information against the patient requisition information according to the Medical Center and department policies.
  • Patients are prepared for phlebotomy, culture, and urine collection procedures according to routine and special phlebotomy protocol to include: routine venipuncture, capillary collection, heel sticks, blood bank collection, legal blood alcohol, therapeutic drugs, patient's with IV's, mastectomy patients, and any other miscellaneous phlebotomy procedures.
  • Tolerance test solutions are calculated, measured, prepared, and given according to procedure to include: glucose, lactose, dextrose, and d-xlose.
  • Patient samples are collected and labeled correctly and within acceptable response time (STAT response 5 minutes or less, timed specimens + 15 minutes, routine at designated intervals, outpatients < 15 minutes.) according to policies and procedures.
  • Post phlebotomy and specimen collection care are followed according to procedure.
2. Specimens are processed and distributed according to procedure to ensure optimal specimen integrity.
  • Specimens are collected in the Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) before distribution to the appropriate laboratory department.
  • Reference clinic specimens are identified, centrifuged, separated, and labeled according to procedure, before being distributed to the appropriate laboratory department.
  • Send-out reference laboratory specimens are prepared and shipped with appropriate paperwork and ordered in a timely manner.
3. Performs computer, clerical, and receptionist duties so patient demographic and data information is available as needed for patient care and satisfaction.
  • Patient orders are found in Centralized Scheduling System, printed, and entered in the LIS in a timely manner.
  • Patient orders are entered in an accurate and timely manner to include correct data in all appropriate fields.
  • Reports are printed, faxed, called, and distributed according to request and protocol.
  • Computer maintenance is performed on schedule or as needed and documented.
4. Interacts with and addresses all client needs in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Communicates with physicians and physician staff with courtesy, accuracy and respect for confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates ability to handle inquiries about test requirements, preparation and projected turn-around-time.
  • Knowledge of result procedures and content so as to help answer physician and staff inquiries.
  • Ability to investigate and follow-up with Technologist, Lab Director and/or Pathologist for difficult inquiries by clients. Assure information is relayed in a complete and timely manner.
5. Employee stays abreast of policy and procedural changes. Maintains competency in all technical, computer, and clerical functions.

6. Complies with Methodist Fremont Health (MFH) safety policies and procedures and regulatory requirements e.g., Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Joint Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), etc.
  • Performs job duties in a manner consistent with organization and departmental safety policies and procedures.
  • Completes departmental safety requirements, (i.e., Blitz, departmental in-services, etc.) on an annual basis.
7. Employee provides courier services for outreach clients if and when needed.
  • Handles the specimen in a manner which ensures optimal condition for testing. (Temperature, light exposure, leakage, ordered/packaged properly-OSHA compliant.).
  • Interacting professionally and courteously with physicians and staff.
  • Deliver results and supplies as needed and consistent with regulatory guidelines.
8.   • High school diploma or equivalent General Educational Development (G.E.D.), may include specialized or vocational courses, required.
Experience
  • One year of health care related experience preferred.
  • One year medical or laboratory assistant experience preferred.

  • Ability to type 35 wpm,
  • Ability to completed 10 key
  • Knowledge of computers.
  • Able to organize and priorities work demands and handle multiple tasks.
  • Knowledge of basic phlebotomy, specimen collection, selection, handling and storage activities.
  • Must exhibit good customer service skills
  • Able to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
