Department: Laboratory Location: Trinity POSITION SUMMARY Under direction and supervision of a Medical Technologist, obtains patient samples, performs basic non-interpretive technical procedures, answers the telephone, files and charts patient reports according to prescribed laboratory policies and procedures. Acknowledges and responds appropriately to the hospital's customer relations philosophy, including the five fundamentals of the AIDET program. POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Ability to perform non-interpretive technical laboratory procedures under the supervision of a Medical Technologist.
  • Ability to perform clerical tasks.
  • Knowledge of Infection Control Practices to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Knowledge of Safety Standards to perform job responsibilities in a safe manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
  • POSITION QUALIFICATIONS/ Minimum EducationHigh school education is the formal education preferred. Minimum of two years experience as a phlebotomist. No certification required. On-the-job training and education is provided. Emotional demands require working under stressful circumstances with frequent interruptions. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Clerical skills necessary to maintain logs and reports in a neat and orderly manner. Must be able to adapt to precise instructions and procedures when collecting blood samples. Demonstrates interpersonal skills in utilizing tact and genuine caring and concern when dealing with patients. Work is of medium demand and requires walking, standing and sitting for most of the shift. Position requires skills in working with patients ranging in age from newborn to geriatric. This position has been determined to be at a high risk for potential exposure to blood and/or body fluids. Experience Minimum of two years experience as a phlebotomist. No certification required. Environmental Demands Inside, temperature-controlled work environment. Equipment RequirementsMedical and biomedical equipment use necessary along with computer and telephone skills. Emotional/Mental Requirements Precision, detail orientation, accuracy, concentration and initiative required in a busy, moderately stressful working condition. Must be able to deal with all customers in a patient and understanding manner. Physical Demands
    • Standing/Walking: Frequent to continuous Worker is on his/her feet the majority of each day to perform the direct and indirect patient care activities.
    • Bending/Stooping: Frequent (knees extended; standing knees flexed; sitting) Bending/Stooping is required in most job activities for blood drawing.
    • Lifting: Occasional An average of 5-10% of this worker's day will be spent in lifting activities. The weight lifted will range from 1 to approximately 40 pounds depending on the activity.
    • Carrying: Frequent Worker must carry phlebotomy tray (3-5 lbs.) to patient location.
    • Pushing/Pulling: Occasional worker is only responsible for push/pull activities when customer service situations mandate involvement in patient transportation, equipment and supplies.
    • Twisting/Turning: Occasional Twisting/Turning are often occur in combination with lifting and bending activities. Worker may twist/turn when stocking supplies, performing blood draws and performing clerical duties.
    • Kneeling: Occasional This worker occasionally kneels for indirect patient care activities and obtaining supplies.
    • Handling/Manual Dexterity: Frequent Both fine and gross motor skills are very necessary for all laboratory work.
    • Temperament : Continuous Ability to maintain self-control in stressful situations.
