Summary:

+ A Laboratory Assistant in Anatomic Pathology Histology Lab is an individual trained on-the-job for clerical work and surgical specimen/ slide receipt, accession, and distribution for subsequent laboratory processing and/or diagnosis.

Responsibilities:

+ Performs assigned pre-analytical activities necessary for specimen or slide receipt and accessioning Follows established SOPs for specimen reconciliation, accessioning for appropriate processing of biological specimens for analysis and evaluates and solves problems or discrepancies related to that process. Coordinates with Patient Access for outpatient case registration. Mindful of appropriate medical coding and billing Handles patient insurances as needed for correct accession/billing.Understanding of medical terminology for appropriate selection of part-types in accessioning and specimen handling and appropriate number of blocks assigned. Enters deficiencies for QA studies.Performs additional transcription, filing, and faxing as needed for surgical cases and consult casesOperates the pneumatic tube system and specimen dumbwaiter properly and observes all Infection Control policies while handling specimens Provides timely distribution of specimens and slides to appropriate laboratory sections Maintains accurate and orderly logs, records and/or worksheets where required according to SOP's.Maintains a safe and orderly work area Monitors work area and specimen receipt for appropriate triage Demonstrates safe work practices Keeps work area free from personal documents & items.Answers phone in a professional, courteous, and timely manner speaking to caller in a caring manner Answers questions or refers callers to the appropriate source Avoids putting caller on hold or transferring call unnecessarily Researches phone inquiries regarding specimen collection or test results by referencing available manuals and records, and calls caller back promptly.Understands collection requirements for special or referral testing, receives and accessions, ensures integrity and correctness of sample submission requirements per SOP, and arranges for pick-up of specimens as needed. Delivers slides to pathologists for timely diagnosis and manages case distribution per volume. Prioritizes specimen handling and accessioning appropriately per SOP. Keeps current with laboratory minutes and documented changes Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies for surgical pathology, re-stocks, and appropriately communicates the need to re-order before supplies run out. Organizes specimens for storage and appropriate retention per CAP policies.Assist with the instruction of procedures and techniques to other employees Performs daily temperature checks on rooms, additional instrument PM as needed/trained.Complies with Hospital, Laboratory, Safety and HIPAA regulations Notifies Supervisor or Safety Officer of hazards when found Completes annual mandatories on or before the due date Responsible for maintaining adequate staffing.

Credentials:

Education or Equivalent Experience:

+ H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)

+ Education Specialization:Equivalent Experience:-And Prior experience in hospital laboratory receiving area-And Prior experience with the Laboratory Information System
