LABORATORY MANAGER
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking a highly skilled and organized Laboratory Manager to oversee the maintenance, operation, and training related to key Departmental equipment. The primary focus of this role will be maintaining and managing the Department mass spectrometers, but the successful candidate will also be responsible for managing other laboratory instruments used in instructional and shared research laboratories, including optical spectrometers, chromatographs, and thermal analysis equipment. The Laboratory Manager will ensure that equipment is functioning properly, organize regular maintenance, and troubleshoot issues, as well as coordinate with vendors and technicians for repairs. Additionally, the Laboratory Manager will provide hands-on training to new users and ensure compliance with proper usage protocols and safety regulations.
Duties and Responsibilities
Mass Spectrometry
* Operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of Department mass spectrometers
* Routine calibration and performance validation to ensure high-quality data output
* Provide technical support to researchers using mass spectrometry in their projects
Maintenance of Additional Lab Equipment
* Oversee the use and maintenance of instructional and shared use lab equipment, including fluorometers, ICP-OES, circular dichroism spectrometers, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, and infrared spectrometers
* Perform regular equipment inspections and schedule preventative maintenance
* Troubleshoot mechanical, technical, and operational problems, and escalate to company technicians if necessary
Training and Supervision
* Provide training to new users on the proper use, maintenance, and safety procedures for Departmental equipment
* Provide training to lab coordinators, TA
* Ensure that all users are trained to follow safety regulations and best practices
* Maintain records of user training and equipment usage
Vendor and Technical Support
* Serve as the primary contact for service technicians and coordinate repairs or maintenance with external vendors
* Maintain communication with manufacturers and technical support teams to ensure that any equipment issues are promptly addressed
Performs other duties as assigned
Salary Range: $52,555 - $85,400
Bachelor's degree in Science or a related field and eight (8) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement

Preferred Qualifications
* M.S. or Ph.D. degree in chemistry or a related field
* Experience with mass spectrometers, including operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, preferred
* Proficiency with a wide range of laboratory equipment, including optical, chromatographic and thermal analytical
* Strong technical skills and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues.
* Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
* Ability to train and supervise new users, ensuring they follow all necessary safety and operational protocols
* Strong communication skills for working with faculty, students, and vendors
* Previous experience as a Laboratory Manager or in a similar role involving laboratory equipment maintenance and supervision
* Familiarity with maintenance management systems and basic budgeting for equipment servicing
