The university leads multiple partnerships and programs to provide equitable healthcare resources in a variety of south Los Angeles neighborhoods.SummaryThe Center for Accelerating Excellence in Translational Science (AXIS) Research Capacity Core (RCC), located in the Division of Cancer Research and Training, is recruiting a skilled individual to manage the daily operations of the Research Laboratory. The individual will support CDU investigators, collaborators, and students by providing training, technical expertise, and research support on various instrumentation and laboratory techniques. In this way, the individual will help faculty and students advance research across the Institution. In addition, the Manager will develop and implement a recharge center model for shared research facilities by providing a service to faculty, students, and external users in the research community. Recharge centers aim to recover the cost of running the Core/Units.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develops standard operating protocols and manages overall function for the core laboratory.
  • Implement a new laboratory management system (Agilent iLab) for all specialized equipment
  • Manages and maintains major equipment within the core laboratory.
  • Provides equipment operation as a service as per individual researcher's intended use.
  • Develops and implements a recharge center model for shared research facilities that provide a product or a service to faculty, students, and external users in the research community.
  • Provides instruction and training in core equipment operation to new users.
  • Establishes and maintains the core laboratory inventory that includes chemicals, cell lines/tissues, instrument usages and related projects' activities, and generates weekly report to the PI and Chief, Dr. Vadgama.
  • Manages routine maintenance procedures and emergency repair situations.
  • Acquires knowledge of new technology and policy/procedure revisions
  • Assist new PIs with lab start-up, including arranging moving and shipments of items.
  • Maintain lab safety standards and safety training, including videos, for CDU investigators and trainees
  • Additionally, conduct laboratory safety audits on a regular basis and retain audit reports using iAuditor.
  • Manage negotiations and contracts for the use of core facilities by CDU and other outside interests.
  • Establishes and ensures efficient arrangement and use of laboratory space.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop a business model for Laboratory Research Operation
  • Develop external user contacts for the core Units.
  • Implement Agilent iLab Management System for all specialized equipment.
  • Availability to work on weekends and evenings to complete time-sensitive projects.
  • Oversee Laboratory Technicians within the Unit.
  • Other duties as requested.
EDUCATION:
  • Minimal requirements include a bachelor's degree in biological sciences, bioinformatics, or a related field.
  • Masters in Biological Sciences, Bioinformatics, or related field preferred.
  • PhD in Biological Sciences, Molecular and Genomic Research, or related field preferred.
  • Able to perform duties and resolve problems independently and as a team Leader.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Experience with high throughput molecular biology techniques.
  • Experience with next-generation short read sequencing is preferred but not required.
  • Experience in performing DNA and RNA extractions on various sample types is preferred.
SKILLS:
  • Assists Principal Investigators with grant preparation and reporting of results.
  • Ability to analyze Next Generation Sequencing data is desired using open source or Licensed CLC genomic software (Qiagen) is preferred.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in the organization of workflow.
  • Able to perform duties independently, with a minimal need for direct supervision.

  • The ability to perform highly detailed work with sustained attention and care while providing/obtaining information on numerous inquiries is paramount to success in this position.
