The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), School of Medicine, Department of Medicine, Division of Rheumatology is currently recruiting for a Laboratory Research Assistant.

Position specific responsibilities include:
* Live cell imaging using Confocal microscopy.
* Cellular metabolism and mitochondrial respiration assays.
* Flow cytometry.
* Transfections and viral-based gene transfer methods.
* Protein chemical assays including immunoprecipitation and immunoblotting.
* Extraction and analysis of DNA and mRNA, including PCR and quantitative PCR.
* Logging, biobanking, and tracking human samples.
* Data analysis and recording of results electronically and in lab notebooks.
* Protocol and literature searches.
* Presenting raw data weekly during laboratory meetings.
* Ordering and organizing laboratory supplies, equipment, and reagents.
* Co-operating with a team of scientists.
* Project planning based on experimental results.
* Perform routine laboratory maintenance and research activities such as: general housekeeping, wipe tests, ELISA assays, preparing solutions, media, stains, and buffers; cultures and specimens; autoradiograms and photomicrographs, executing biochemical procedures such as: electrophoresis, blotting, chromatography, and DNA extractions, etc.
* May perform advanced laboratory research activities. May participate in the design of research studies.
* Compile and may analyze research data using various relevant computer software applications.
* Assist with literature research, editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations, and computer graphics for publication.
* Perform administrative duties such as: training and guiding students and/or other laboratory technicians; assisting in developing policies, procedures, and/or methods for laboratory experimentation; and ordering supplies.
* Tissue culture of human immune and endothelial cells.
* Perform other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.
Experience: NA
Preferred Experience: Prior laboratory experience involving translational research laboratory experience is preferred but not required.
Prior experience handling and processing laboratory samples preferred.
Experience with statistical platforms such as R, SASS, and SPSS is preferred but not required.
Other: May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.
May consider a combination of directly related experience and education.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Comfort using multi-channel pipette.
* Ability to contribute as a co-author on scientific publications.
* Proficiency in using Microsoft suit programs such as Word and Power Point to create scientific figures.
* Comfort learning new computational and experimental skills.
Hiring Range: $46,000 - $52,000 (Commensurate with education and experience)
